Title: My 85 k10 build
Post by: gto109 on March 05, 2011, 06:16:05 pm
In Oct of 2010 i picked up this 85 Chevy.  When i go it, it ran good, just needed a new bed and some minor work.  About a month later the Transmission died.  So i decided to get the parts it needed and take that gas tank out of the bed and put one back where it belonged.  So far had to fix the floor because someone jumped the truck, new bench set, gas tank, and i finally found a bed in the middle of February.

Welcome to the site, looks like the same color 77 I just bought a little while ago for a parts truck.  Looks like you got a good foundation for a build.

I'm not having any luck finding a transmission.  Have any of you used a Jasper or Monster transmission?

What kind of transmission are you looking for ?

Either a 350 or a good 700r4.

Nice machine, and an added nod for the gun rack ;D

If you have a good trans builder local to you I would go that route. What trans is in it now?

It came with a 700r4 that was on its last legs.  Although during the flood in December it hauled all the tools and stuff out of the garage with only 2 forward gears left.  Made it back to the garage and it had 1 left and reverse was about gone by that point as well.

Finally got down to see what my buddy Justin has done to my truck today.  He is the one who put the bed on for me.  I forgot to mention that he is helping me as I have a really messed up arm I'm learning what I can and can't do with now.  I don't recommend falling off the back of an 18 wheeler it hurts.

I'm thinking about getting a set of 3/4 ton leaf springs for the front to match the ones in the back.  Will they work on a 1/2 ton Axel?  A set of 33s would be nice in the future too.

Well on Friday i found a guy with a rebuilt 700r4 and a rebuilt transfer case for sale for only $300.  They are in the truck and it's alive again.  Now time to put the emissions stuff back on it so i can get it inspected and legal again.

Sounds like you are getting almost to the point where you can drive it again, keep up the good work and progress.

Lets see did some boneyard shopping these last few weeks.  Found a nice grill, a nice rear bumper off a blazer and brackets off a truck, and a power steering pump.  Now it no longer squeals going around turns. put the grill in it and realized I forgot to put the turn signals in it so had to fix that (had a blonde moment there).  Now for some reason the horn is not working and I have parking lights but no flashers at all right now for some reason.  Anyone have a clue what I did wrong there?  Also once I figure out what wires are for what I got a new CD player for it a small amp and some 8 inch full range boxes for music.

Well today I installed a Sony CD player today.  Also a set of 3.5" Sony speakers in the dash.  I started to wire it up for an amp as well.  I picked up a pair of euro taillights dirt cheep new and I think they look good.   I'll post pictures soon.

The wife wants me to put a 70's front on my truck.  Aside from core support, headlight wire harness and sheet metal is there anything else I'll need?

I went down to the hanger today thinking I might do something with the truck.  Instead I decided to take some pictures of of the new toolbox for you guys and put on a diffrent post and what all I have to put on the truck laying on my trailer mostly in boxes.  The hood I got from Chris and I love how it looks.  There is rockers, 4 rancho shocks, a new windshield whipper motor, a tinted rear window, all the door weather strips including quarter windows, smog pump (state says i need it), billet grill and headlight surrounds, and of course the brush guard

nope.  I checked on that one auction you posted and it was only for the one side.  One of these days I'll find the tailgate panel for it as well.

Today was one of them days I would sooner forget ever happened at the hanger.  Started off by hooking up the new windshield whipper motor only to find out that the switch was bad like everything else on the column not the whipper motor.  Looked at the new column and wished I had more then a few hours total.  Then I took the headlight surrounds off no problems, took the grill off broke it getting it out and it was a nice one.  Salamander ran out of fuel. Took the grill trim off and and went to put the new ones on and the mounting tabs wouldn't bite so I only got the top one on couldn't get the bottom ones to bite at all.  Got cold,  my right arm started to bother me so I turned everything off and went home.  Wendsday is going to be close to 50 so I think I'll go back down then.

Today was a much better day at the hanger.  The plastic things that hold the trim on the front of the truck are still a royal PITA but I got them on with the trim now if I could only get that one side to line up right.  Finally put the new grill and headlight surrounds on today that I got about a month ago.  Small stuff but I thought I would update a little.  Tomarrow I might try and get that steering column in it that I also pulled out of a 90 suburban about a month ago as well.  Quick question with this headlight set up when the high beams are on do the upper lights turn off?

This is my brothers 89 diesel crew cab.  His hanger is 3 down from mine.  This is our work truck and he just took it off the road for major repairs.  He is thinking about putting a utility bed back on it.

I'm beginning to think there is something tweaked in the front end of this truck.  I had a hard time trying to get the new hood to line up.  I ended up taking a drill and elongating the one bracket holes to get it to fit somewhat right.  When I put the grill guard on I noticed that the one side is closer to the side of the fender then the other side is. >:(  I was told by my neighbor to check the bushings for the front next time I go down there.

Do you guys own these hangers or just rent them ?  Looks like you got enough room to work on your trucks.

I rent from the airport.  The old ones are storage hangers.  It also floods once and a while there.  You can fit 4 cars in on of them.  I have 3 in mine.

Well since I do not know how to weld my buddy Justin took my truck to his house and with the rockers I got from the Chris's store he is fixing the last little bit of rust the truck has.  When I get pictures of the other side I will post them as well.

Thank you guys.  I'm still undecided on the color I'm going to paint it.  I am leaning towards the gray that's on the new Chevy trucks but I also liked the bright blue that Chevy used a few years ago on them.  The dodge I just got a few weeks ago is blue so that's why I am leaning more towards the gray.  I think Kenny A.K.A. Chevyrado's truck is that color gray I am thinking about.  After paint then a 6" lift is next along with 35's on the 3/4 ton axles I have for it with 3.73 gears.  I don't think I will ever have an accurate speedometer in that truck.

Here is the drivers side.  When Justin started cutting the rust out on this side the cab mount fell apart on him.  Neither one of use thought it was bad, so some scrap square tube and all is fixed.  The picture with the red lines is ruffly what was cut out and replaced along with the rocker panel that was just riveted to the old rusted out one that the prior owner did.

Just a little update.  I haven't touched this truck in a while due to money troubles and troubles with the ex.  Right now I also acquired the '86 trans am that she always thought was hers.  Right now that car is going to get finished first so I can run it and see what all is wrong with it and maybe sell it in about a year or 2 unless I decide to keep it.  Once that car is done and I get back on my feet and all the legal stuff is taken care of with her I will get that truck finished after that.  I still go down once a week and fire it up to keep everything lubed up.

Wow it's been a while since I have been here.  Basically the Chevy sat for 2 years.  Now I'm making it road legal for here.  The parts list I just picked up today includes both break calipers, both front  break hoses and pads, all 4 shocks, and the left axle joint.  It's at the garage now for exhaust work and New tie rod ends and the bar they connect to.

I got the truck from the garage on Tuesday.  Wednesday I ordered seatbelt extenders and going to Napa today to pick up door bushings & pin kits.  Theone guy I know is parting out a red short bed I'm going to get the Silverado interior from it and the chrome cab trim that wraps the back of the cab under the window

Well I had a bunch of small things to fix on the truck.  So last week I went to Napa to get them.  I knew I didn't have the time last week to work on it, but I knew I would this week.  Last night I took it to Wal-Mart and grenaded the transmission.  So back to square one fixing the transmission.
