i've never done it before, and it looks like a cramped area thats gonna be a pain but im thinking it might be time to replace my starter.
its most likely stock and over 30 years old.
it has a atleast one pretty noticeable crack down the middle of the circled plastic part.

instead of buying a new starter, if you have any old starters laying around you can use those for parts.

I'd say just replace the solenoid, but, if it really is that old, go ahead and replace the whole starter. It is very easy unless you have headers. Remove the gound cable of the battery. Remove the wires, but note which wires go where, you have a big nut and a small nut. Then it is just two bolts that come out...she's pretty heavy though for a small part. Turn your core in and get anutter.

oh, heck on my suburban i just rebuilt the starter using parts from old ones.

I have this starter and its about 7 years old. you can rotate it and gain more distance from the header to keep it cooler.

yes and has a higher torque gearing. I dont need the extra torque, but its nice that it is there. Its quieter too.
