Title: spare tire
Post by: PromiseKeeper on March 16, 2011, 06:31:47 am
Nothing major, just want to hear what's worked for you.... my 80 fleetside swb doesn't have any kind of spare tire carrier. Have you fabricated something that worked...or found a junk yard one? I'm going to be installing a Reese type hitch, so trying to decide if I want it underneath or in the bed. Would the stock one work with the hitch? Would one of the cable lift type from a newer model be the ticket? Might be tough finding a good one here because of the road salt. Thanks!

I made an in-bed spare tire carrier out of 3 pieces angle iron (salvaged from an old twin size bed rail) and a long piece of allthread.
Mounted it to the bedside on the driver's side.

I think the underbed mounted tire would be not so fun to get to if you had a flat while it was raining or snowing. My truck has a hitch in the way so I couldn't mount it there anyway.

Mine just lays beside my tool box in front of the wheel well.

Make a roof mount for it, that would be cool.
