Title: 6x9's in cab corners
Post by: mtw on September 17, 2001, 05:54:00 pm
My 83 K10 has spots for 4x10's.  I would like to hear some ideas for mounting 6x9's in those spots.  I am concerned that they look factory (or better).  How did you guys do it?  I have a cheap adapter plate, but I am not very impressed with it.  Just looking for ideas.

just get some mdf. and mount that, route the edges, and put the 6x9's is the corners, they don't need boxes, and mdf looks great, u can paint it and it will blend right in. i think u would be inpressed. or another thing u could do it make some rings out of mdf, and put some 6.5's in the doors just in the front bottom corner of your doors. the sound from them is really good.

I just threw mine in the corner.... works good enough for me.

Nice advice ChevyGuy.  I'm kinda lookin for a professional look however.  I have considered putting two 5-1/4" drivers in each of the 4x10 spots with a custom mounting plate.  That way I can run 2 ohms and increase the power output of the amp.  Has anyone considered something like this?

Title: NO CUTTING!
Post by: mtw on September 18, 2001, 03:11:00 pm
Camel, I am thinking about buying Q-Forms for the front kick panels and installing a 6.5 and tweeter in each of those.  I DO NOT want to butcher my doors.  My truck is near show quality and all GM.  I wan't to upgrade the stereo to something quite cool BUT without cutting my doors or the rear cab corners.  Kick panels could be removed if I wanted to show the truck in stock.  Patching holes would be tough.  I looked long and hard to find replacement GM parts to restore my doors to brand new condition.  I am having a very tough time cutting the hole in my 150.00 instrument bezel for a DIN opening.  My only consolation is that I have an extra that will not be cut.

chevy guys standards r quite low. no offense, umm i liek round speakers, kick panels are the best way to go the doors were easy, yea they are butchered but it looks really good i need a pic of it. i wouldn't run your speakers at a 2 ohm load, they will lose sound quality unless u have a use or phoenix gold amp. i do liek the idea of kick panels go, they are the bestway to go for sound quality. for a show truck i would make them personnally just to make it more custom, but that gets tricky. the cd player is a breeze to instal in those trucks, it looks like it was meant to be there. and subs can be hidden easily behind the seat. use high quality low (big in size) guage wire, liek 4 guage min for amps. and big speaker wires never hurt either. and just remember in car audio, u get what u pay for. there aren't many deals out there inless u buy some jl subs, they are a steal.

Title: 2 Ohms
Post by: mtw on September 21, 2001, 09:25:00 am
Camel, I am running 2 ohms in my car and it sounds GREAT!  I have a Precision Power amp though.  The speakers are MB Quart.  I was looking at a Kenwood or MTX amp for my truck.  I want a 5 channel so I only have one amp to hide.  I was going to go with Infinity Reference speakers in my truck.  PPI makes a five channel amp, but it is huge and has more power than I will ever need.  I have owned JL Audio subs before and was very impressed with them.  I will have to look at them for my truck.  I want to run one or two 10" subs.  I always run quality cabling.  I had over 500.00 just in the wiring in my car!  OUCH!  It was all Streetwires stuff.  I picked out a JVC CD player because it had a volume KNOB and a brushed aluminum finish that will blend in with my truck dash well.  I hope it is a good one.  It also plays MP3's on CD-R's or CD-RW's.

Title: good amp make big difference
Post by: camel on September 21, 2001, 05:24:00 pm
thats good to hear u run top of the line stuff. i have heard that the ppi c 2's are another great sounding sub along with the w0's. these are what i would choose, don't even bother with the other stuff. u want good sound and mtx and kenwood can't touch that. alpine is supposed to make a great 5 chan. u should look into that aswell.

Title: PPI Amp
Post by: mtw on September 22, 2001, 01:17:00 am
I have been doing a little more research and I have found a PPI 5 channel smp that might do the trick.  It is 17.12" long and 10" wide though.  That is a little on the large side.  It has 60x4 plus 240x1 at 2 ohms.  If I wanted to run a single ten, I think I would get a dual voice coil JL so I could use all 240 watts.  Or I could run two single voice coil JL's.  I will have to see how large they want the box to be.  I think I will stick with Infinity Reference full rangers.  I would MB Q but they cost a lot more.  Now that I am married and have kids, I must justify every penny.

Title: small boxes r ooook
Post by: camel on September 23, 2001, 12:16:00 pm
in trucks since the cabins are so small u can have smaller boxes then they say. and w0's can go in boxes liek half a cubic foot anyways.

Title: my system

i have a kicker comp. 10 running off of a splash 350 watt amp. i have boston acoustics 6x9 s in the back corners behind bucket seats that you can't see and boston acoustics 6 1/2 s in the doors running off of a sony explod cd player. it sounds awesome and the box fit behind my bench seat when i had one. you have to remember that it doesn't have to be huge to be loud in a small metal cab. my thumps like crazy. peace.

I've finally got my system in my 85 tweaked out how I want it. I have an Eclipse deck powering my 4.5 two way Eclipse speakers in the dash, and two way Eclipse 4x10s in the back corners for my treble and mid range. Since the 4x10s dont put out much low range. I have a cheaper rockford fosgate 10in sub behind the passenger side with an amp 250watt orion amp I got a deal on. I have a 40/60 seat out of a newer truck so my seat is further back with the sub on the passenger side.
Behind my seat I was easly able to mount my amp and kicker crossover to the back wall.  I plan on redoing my system a little with a 4-channel for my speakers and possible two 8inch subs (less space) since I just I just want a little low range bass with out alot of space taking up. The amp was used for 20 bucks and the 10in sub with the box was 150 bucks.

The one on the left is some custom bracket I got at the stereo shop for 73-87 trucks.  It screws into the stock locations, but allows you to put in 6x9's.  The one on the right is made by METRA.  It is a set of adapter plates that allows you to mount a 6x9's in the 4x10 locations.  They are part number 82-4000.

6 1/2"s will fit nicely into Q-Forms in the kick panels.  You can get them for 150 bucks at sounddomain.com.  They are a custom fit for our trucks, and come in factory colors.  I am getting some myself.

I purchased them locally (Pocatello, Idaho) from Kyle at Sound Source.  Their telephone number is (208)   233-0011.  He had a hard time finding them for me, but maybe he knows where to get them now.  Good luck!

Edit:  Stupid emoticons that is supposed to be 208 with parenthesis around it.

Hey MTW,
QUOTE: I picked out a JVC CD player because it had a volume KNOB and a brushed aluminum finish that will blend in with my truck dash well.
Do you have the model number of that unit? Can you get any pics of it. I too do not want to cut up my dash to fit an aftermarket radio in there. Man I thought I was gonna be stuck with this stock radio for life.

just for reference.....they make aftermarket stereo's that look and fit just like the factory units,,,but are just like the premium units like pioneer,jvc,sony,,etc..they have cd, high power,,etc...look in catalogs like www.yearone.com. there  are "other" catalogs out there that offer similar products. peace

Hey Guys, I'm new to your site, but being a 17 yr old teenager and owning a 1983 C10, I just had to put tons of speakers in it. My truck did not come with factory speaker brackets. I thought long and hard about putting 6x9's in the cab corners, then thought about 5x7's, then dual 5 1/4's, but I settled on the idea of 4x6" speakers (I hate the look of 4x10's), I made some panels to fit in the space and carpeted them with regular speaker box carpet. I personally like Pyramind Gold Series mid-ranges because they are high quality and low priced. Go to the installations section of [link=http://www.geocities.com/speakerboxesbybob/first.html newwindow]MY SITE[/link] for some pictures of what this looks like in my truck. For those who are interested, I will build and carpet this panel and send them to you for $30 including shipping.
[mail]sender237@mail.com[/mail]

I competed in three local car stereo shows (SPL) and came home with three 1st place trophies.

My system has (4) Bazooka 10" Subs, Crunch 1200 watt amp pushing them, JDL 400 watt 4ch.(Mounted under dash on passenger side wall, out of sight) pushing 2 competition tweeters and 2 Pyramid Gold Series 4" 2 ways in dash. 6 more tweeters in the sub box, and the two 4x6's.
