Title: Horn and Steering Wheel Question
Post by: 78chevystepside on March 27, 2011, 10:20:23 pm
I just replaced my steering wheel in a 78 Chevy C10 Stepside with a Grant Classic Series steering wheel. I connected the horn as instructed and the first time I used the horn it blew a fuse. I'm just curious, do you all think that it was a bad fuse, bad installation, or an incompatable steering wheel that blew the fuse. I'm going to go buy a new fuse for it tomorrow, didn't have time to run up to Auto Zone tonight. Also curious, should I try a heavier duty fuse and run the risk of hurting the horn? Thanks.

if it does it again, take the horn button out and look around for a bad wire. dont use a larger fuse. it wont hurt the horn, 12v is 12v. the fuse is telling you something is wrong.

Update:

I replaced the horn relay, hasn't blown yet. However, the horn doesn't always work. It actually only works when I'm going over about 30-40 mph. Any slower or at idle I hear a clicking noise from under the steering wheel when I try. Not sure if its a spark, doesn't sound like a spark but who knows. Any ideas? Thanks.

The clicking noise is the relay activating. It soubds to me like a short or your horns dont have a good ground. Check all wiring for the horn and clean up their mounting spots for better ground.

I second 1979c20, that would be my first guess and what I would do first.
