Title: Cold Climate
Post by: mach1mustang351 on March 30, 2011, 01:47:04 am
So what do you guys that live in the snowy cold places do to your trucks for the winter??  Gear oil changed with something thinner in the axles and manual transmissions?  Different mixes of antifreeze?  I was wondering when I was hating life trying to pump gear oil into one of my cars this weekend and wondered what the cold parts of the world do.

Nothing different for oils or anti freeze hear. Have a block heater. I plug mine in over night if its going to be 10ish degrees or colder. between 35, and 10 degrees I still plug it in but have it set on a timer so it kicks on a couple hours before I leave in the AM. Let it run for a few mins before driving it too.

I don't change any fluids in the winter.  I have used a battery blanket, weather front, block heater and if my block heater has died, a magnetic oil pan heater.  I run propane on my current truck and I have a heater in the mixer when it gets really cold.

I don't change anything for winter or summer, unless its really cold, then I have a piece of cardboard I slip in front of the radiator to get decent heat.

Sometimes when the seasons change you can get a good deal on cases of 5w30, so I'll run that in the winter. Keep the washer fluid and gas tanks topped off, throw the ice scraper in the gun rack, and keep the scoop shovel and tow rope handy.

Oh yeah forgot about the cardboard. I have a real thick wax coated piece I side in front of my radiator too. Make sure the plow is in working order also!

Wish it was here.  Today isn't to bad but real windy.  Yesterday was mid 40's damp and generally a crappy day.  I did manage to get one mirror changed out so I am that much closer to my first car show in May...

Here's what I used to do:

-Nothing 'heavier' than 10W-30 motor oil; otherwise, no lighter gear oil (If I lived in Fairbanks I would use 5W-30 and 75-90 gear oil and probably all synthetic)
-50% antifreeze mix; sometimes 60%
-Block heater, oil pan heater, and battery blanket; all on a timer
-When real cold-cardboard in front of radiator to keep cold air from flowing into the engine compartment and 'air cooling' the engine
-Use of the factory hood insulation (I think every little bit helps)

It's funny you posted on this and are from Anchorage.  I just got offered a job in Anchorage and I'm contemplating the move.  How do you like it up there??

I was polite you told me use proper puncuation, when what you could have done was simply give me a message in my inbox and say, your grammar off a bit no offense something like that. Instead you tryed to make me look stupid in a forum?? I never cursed or said, anything out of line man anyways I park it for the winter. These trucks become harder to find due to bad weather climates, and salt on the roads. These trucks rust on there own bad enough I think. I was a kid, in 85 my dad restored a 78 it was 7 years old and rusty, but he did the body work and paint looked great held up good but he kept it garaged.

Thanks for taking the argument elsewhere beastie.

So, yesterday was a beatiful day. Low to mid 80's all day. My parents, 2 friends, me, my girlfriend, and 4 family friends went out offroading to sycamore creek and barbequed. Great day. 4 jeeps and 1 2wd chevy ;) I kept up with the big boys too! I burried my truck to the rear bumper playing around in the water. I went to slow and just plain burried 'er. Luckily, zero damage this time. Im thinking about throwing sone pictures up soon.
