Is there a difference between left and right side gas tank brackets on a 87 3/4 ton 4x4??
-
Front to back is different, left to right is the same, if I remember correctly.
-
You are asking about the brackets right ? Not the straps that hold the gas tank to the brackets. If so I believe Grim82 is correct.
-
I think when I ordered them from GM there is a difference between the sides because of off-set holes. I will post up the link I have when I find it.
-
Yes there is a difference! It is just where the nuts are welded up for the bolts to screw into. They do have both sets of holes for both side but only on set of holes have the nuts weldes on depends on which side they are going on!! I just did this to my 84 K10.

I just replaced my gas tank on my 85 k10. There was a difference in the brackets. The back brackets holes are spaced further apart. Other than that they looked the same to me. Yuo cant realley confuse them because if there backwards the bolt holes wont line up.

so i can take a tank off the drivers side switch the brackets and it will bolt up to the pass side?
-
OK. I got my brackets figured out. Now i have tank questions, my truck is 87 3/4 ton with a 350 carburated engine. the vin # tells me it used to have a diesel. are diesel tanks and gas tanks the same and if not will i have to get a tank for 86 and older. i bought a tank from for 87 gas and their is a tray in the inside of tank that looks like it may be there for a in tank fuel pump

Correct, the 87 tank will have baffles in it because of the in-tank fuel pump.

The tanks are identical, but the discussion seams to be leaning towards requiring side-specific brackets to have the correct bolt hole locations.

i have an 84 k10, are the brackets gm only and if so does anyone know how much coin i will drop on 1 set for the drivers side. thanks steve

I have used brackets off one side for the other, and not had any problems lining up the holes. The welded nuts are in the wrong spot, you will have to weld new ones of them on coresponding with the other sides holes. Front and rear are different, but in a pinch can be modified to work in place of each other, the front strap is a shade shorter as the tank isn't as big under the cab as it is under the bed. The baffles for the pump might interfear with your float.
