hi does anybody know if a 1976 454 engine can use newer 1996 454 vortec heads if so .......what mods are needed .....and does anybody know if these 76 motors are oval or rectangle port ..........this info is for my brother who just got my dads 82 c-10 that he put a 76 454 engine in 20 years ago when he was into street racing
-
Sorry, the newer genV heads have vastly different water passages from the markIV block.
They did offer large oval port heads in 76, you'll have to find the casting numbers. 049 and 871 heads are most desirable castings for street cruising below 5000rpm. If he was into racing, he may have rectangular ports. Better for >5000rpm but not so good for a daily driver.
What does your brother want the BBC to do?

nice power and be a mean street truck ....it has 273 gears i think with factory 4 barrel qjet ,stock intake and cam with 400th trans ......and be drivable if he wanted to drive it daily
-
i found this # number on intake 8283753 or 6263753 cant tell which one but it s one of them ............does any one know ...maybe this will tell me if they have round ports
-
Intake is off a 72 402/454, it would be Oval, but that doesn't mean anything as you can put the intake on a Peanut port head. If the engine is originally from a 76 pickup it could be either peanut port or oval port. You need the numbers off the head under the valve cover.

well father said it came out of a 72 impala car ....never been open up or any part replaced
