Title: Turn Signal Switch
Post by: derrick79 on April 13, 2011, 06:02:18 pm
I went to the local auto wrecker and got myself a steering column with tilt for my truck. I'm not sure exactly what year or model it came from, I just told them I needed one to fit my 76 GMC truck. Anyway I did get one that fits except the harness for the turn signal switch and the harness for the truck itself don't quite line up. I compared the two switches and the one I bought has one extra tab that prevents the two harnesses from snapping together. Did the switches vary from 73-79? If I have to change the switch, is disassembling the column hard? Any special tools needed other than the wheel puller?

Thanks

Wiring changed between 73-79, check the wiring diagrams in the Tech section.

you can trim the new connector with a pocket knife and it will work just look at your old one and trim a little at a time i just did mine today

OK I will try trimming it, thanks. Also, do you guys think its a big deal tha my ignition lock cylinder doesn't go all the way back to lock? Other than the securiy issue of not needing a key to start my truck. It goes back far enough that nothing gets power, just not all the way back to lock.

I'd get a new one while your replacing the turn signal switch

Yeah I accidently pulled a wire from the spoon inside the harness so I guess I will replace the switch anyway. I got the lock cylinder free'd up but for an extra 20 bucks I will replace it. Looks like I will have to get myself a compressor tool or try to make one to take the lockplate off. Thanks again.
