Sup guys,im new to this forum and to my chevy truck... i bough it from a guy that said the timing chain was broken so i when and try to change it...when i got to it,it was bit loose but not broken,so i still change the chain for new one, plus gaskets n stuff... i set the gears to the dots position like the book says,i put everything together and didnt start, i check the distribution box and rotor was broken,so i replace it and still didnt work,so if u someone can give me some tips bout timing please!! :)

When you said it didn't work, or it wouldn't start ? Assuming you did the timing chain correctly and rotor. At TDC on piston #1, you rotor in your distributor should be at about 6:30 position HEI,( 5:30 for points distributor ) if you were at front of truck looking at your distributor, and thinking about a clock face. ( this should be close enough to make it start ) Make sure you disconnect your vacuum advanced hose and plug off, set your timing, then hook back up vacuum advanced hose and set rpm.
Another note, If I remember right, ( I am sure someone will chime in if I am wrong ) the timing chain set can be lined up with the two dots but be 180 degrees out, that's if I remember right.
Welcome to the site from California also.

Thanx bake and canadian...
Bake, I made a mistake,i didnt check for the #1 piston and rotor position before i changed the chain, when i open up the chain cover i saw that the chain was loose and dots didnt alighn how it says on the book,so i move the big gear to get it position with the crankshaft dot and install the chain, after that i start thinking bout the piston #1 n rotor position,i start messing with it for little bit n i got the rotor to point the piston #1 but the piston gotta be up right, not down?

Assuming you installed the timing set correctly, find TDCC (top dead center compression) #1 cylinder and ensure the rotor is pointing at #1 on the cap. If not reinstall the distributor correctly.
-
the rotor its pointing to the #1 piston, when i try to start engine,it sounds like it wants to,so im not sure whats off...
i think i forgot to mention that the rotor was broken when i was changing the chain, last owner said that the truck didnt start and someone told him it was timing chain,so i when with that problem before checking the rotors and timing settings, i have never changed a timing chain before,so when i was doing this, the camshaft dot was like 3 oclock n crankshaft was at 12 oclock,so i was trying to put the camshaft to 6 oclock how the book says,it was little hard to move it to put the dot at 6 oclock, its not normal,i seen vid. that those 2 gears can move freely...

ok i got the engine working now, chain was at the right position, markings on the balancer was at the marks on the timing cover 0. i think im gonna have to get the tool to install the dampener good, cuz i use the bolts to get it in some,n some hitting, but still i think it needs to go in just alittle bit more, cuz the first serpentin belt that goes on the pulley there looks like its its rubbing little bit on the water pump pulley,so i gotta fix that.. the other thing that i see wrong its when i took it around the block,it was only going slow, maybe the max was at 30 mph at most...

This is all on the premise that you installed the timing set correctly. If you did not take off your vacuum advanced and plug it off before setting the timing, you will be advanced too much and will have no power.
I just showed my son how to time my truck and left the vacuum advanced hooked up to show him it would start and run but with no power ( showing him the wrong way is just a good a learning curve as the right way ), then showed him the right way and redid it, the timing mark at first was off the scale on the harmonic balancer to the left and it still ran. After doing it the right way and setting the rpm, the truck ran with 3 times the power and sounded right.
As vile said, it is imperative that you have #1 piston at TDC before you drop your distributor in, if your rotor is off, each revolution (12 gears on dist. shaft) will clock it 30 degrees, you have to keep going around until your rotor is pointing at #1. Be patient and you will get it.

wheres the vaccum advance located?
-
i already remove and install the timing chain like 3 times lol,cuz i made a few mistakes, but i guess that a good way of learning lol..
-
every distributor should have a vacuum advance right?, unless its like after market one?
my brother has the same truck and engine,on his dist. he has the vacuum advance, and he just purchase a new dist. and it came with it, so i wonder why on mine dont have that... what problems i would have if i dont have that?

Your timing doesn't look anywhere near close to me from thos pictures.Even if the rotor is point at #1 Cyl, it doesn't mean the engine is at tdc. The vac advance should be looking at you in the bottom picture, look around the base of the distributor and you'll probably find a little cut out for it. Head down to kragen and pick one up.
-
They sale the vac advance separate or I need to get a new dist.?
-
The sell them seperatly, about $10 if I remember right
-
ESC distributors do not have vacuum advance.
