Can anyone tell me the max towing capacity for an '84 K30 with a 4 speed manual and a 454. Thanks.

I went out and looked through all my original literature that came with my 1985. No where was the towing capacity listed that I could find. I know in my previous Fords literature it was listed by engine/transmission/rear end gearing. Obviously the lower the gear the more the truck was capable of towing. I know I have no problems with 7500 lbs behind my 454/4 speed/3.21 gears and my uncle ordered it special that way to tow his heavy 35 foot fifth wheel and had no problems towing it in the hills in the Lake of the Ozarks area in MO. Wish I could give you a weight figure but I can't, sorry...

Your truck should have no problem pulling 17k even over 20k lbs, provided the hitch is up to the task and the trailer is properly loaded and strapped. I have towed 14k with a half ton, braking is the only limiting factor worth noting. That half ton was grossly overloaded for its braking ability. Otherwise, numbers mean little, If you don't feel comfortable towing it, you probably shouldn't attempt it. The route you will be taking is also a factor in how fast and how heavy you can tow.
Many people are under the impression that if it will pull it it can tow it, and that is far from true.
