10 bolt has a round cover, 10 bolts, and the fill plug is into the little bit of the angled face of the cover. Kinda points toward the left corner of the front bumper.
The 44 has round top and bottom but straiter / vertical sides on the mounting surface. The fill plug points perfectly strait forward and is located on a three sided boss stamped into the cover from the in side.

IIRC, '79s did not come w/ 10 bolts.  I thought 10 bolts started in '81 but I could be wrong.  My '75 has a D44.  Another way to tell if it's a D44 is to look to the right of the inspection cover.  A cast-in 44 will be present if it's, in fact, a D44.

Hey Beastie, Great site. I just copied and pasted the whole thing onto a word document and saved away in my "Truck Stuff" folder.
