Title: 700R4 rebuild?
Post by: smfreema on April 26, 2011, 09:03:29 am
I have rebuild a few Turbo 350 automatic trannys in the past. I now have a 700R4 auto in a 4X4 built 87 Blazer (Built 350 and 38 in BFGS. I believe the sun gear has cracked or broken. My question is: Is rebuilding a 700R4 similar to a turbo 350 or will i be in over my head with the complexity? i have noticed i can get a DVD for this rebuild which may help too..Not having much luck finding a used 700R4 with decent miles for under $500 when i can be a stout rebuild kit for $300..any insight appreciated.

The DVD for rebuilding this tranny is very helpful.

There are a number of good books, too, includig the Factory Service Manual.  I would suggest buying that first.

Normally, I wouldn't generally refer someone to go off the forum, but...  PowerblockTV did an episode on rebuilding a 700R4 using a Monstor Transmissions kit.  Here's a link:   http://www.powerblocktv.com/site3/index.php/xtreme4x4-episodes?ep_num=XT2010-11&ep_sea=1001

Also, over on corvette-guru.com a guy did a great job of photographing and documenting a 700R4 rebuild.  Granted, it's 2WD but the methodology applies.  It's on the C- 4 section.  Try this, his handle is PeteK:  http://www.corvette-guru.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=9464&forum=1

Good luck.  Hope this helps.
