Title: Steel dash removal

Has anyone ever removed there steel dash under the dash pad. I have some rust issues behind it I want to get a better look at and see if I can fix it or need to look for a different cab. Thanks to the huge amount of salt they use here in ontario it now leaks water into the cab GRRRR. Thanks

I can't help you with removing the dash, but there are a few posts on here about it.  I had one heck of a leak coming down the inside of the firewall on mine and fixed it fairly easily by removing the cowl panel and repairing the seam sealer that was cracked and coming apart there.  Might not be your problem but it definitely was mine.

yeah there is spot welds that go into the windshield frame. they are not fun

HMMM Spot welds you say that sucks. Ok well I will have to see what I can do. Never thought about the body seam sealer it is an 1981 so Im sure it will be in poor shape. Thanks for the input.

If your windsheild is out it won't suck as bad, but its still gonna suck. If you get decide to take it out, brace your cab with some angle iron first.

     Removing a dash from one of these trucks is no fun, most people end up cutting it out and screwing it up.  First, you need to remove front windshield as mentioned, then remove everything else from dash, bezel, glove box, etc,etc.  Then you will be able to see the welds and make sure it is something you can get to.

I did it and it was not that bad, Just get you a spot weld cutter...

I took the dash out of my '77 K-30 sled puller.

The windshield has to come out.

I used a die grinder with the metal cutting burrs like you might use to port a cylinder head. By using the die grinder you just buff the spot welds out, and after taking out the 4 bolts on the ends, the dash will fall out.

I didn't have any problem with mine.....Easy as pie.

If I need to I can weld my dash back in at any time.
