Title: New member, new questions
Post by: 79gmc400 on April 28, 2011, 01:34:16 am
just bought a 79 gmc 4x4 custom deluxe with the 400 ci engine and a lift. what is, if any , anything special about this truck, it is black, needs an interior, hood is bent in the usual places, but is a gas to drive. automatic trans, needs some work, ie, oil leaks, brake booster, eventually tires, forementioned hood, door panels, paint. got it for $600 and drove it 75 miles home, no problems. feedback ? Thanks, R

not to put you down or anything but just cause you got it home wouldnt make a good deal we got my 1980 4door dually its 2wd for 780 and got it home just find besides a couple over heating issues cause the radiator had a leak. but so far we have had to dump a load of money in the truck and my parents are really thinking of the next time it decides to act up of sending it to the crusher

i think of it this way: the money I spend each month on my truck is less than a car payment and that same money goes towards improvements of the vehicle. So I win.

I think you did alright.  I would pay that no problem.  BTW, welcome to the site from NW Indiana

Sounds like a deal, getting it for 600 is kind of special. I paid 500 for my 84 parts truck, it leaked everything, missing some windows, rusted very badly, I was going to list the stuff that didn't work but it would be easier to just say the radio works great. i bought it for the engine block and plan on scrapping the rest eventually, but tonight I'm going to snag the brake booster from it and have used lot of little parts from it already.

Well, I think you got a good deal.  My stepson had the same vehicle in a '79 Chevy.  He ended up building a nice flatbed for it because he did some construction w/ it.  He sold it a couple years later way too cheap for all the work he put into it.  But he wanted another project to build.

Even if he drove it to the junkyard it's worth more than what he paid for it. That's a good deal in my book.

I'm sorry, I thought he said he drove it 75 miles with no issues, driving one home and having a couple of overheating issues is not the same, that right there would have made me start looking the truck over and seeing what else was wrong.
Welcome to the site 79gmc400 from California.  Get the brake booster and transmission fixed and enjoy the truck.

Thank you all for your warm welcome. This type of truck I have been eyeballing since my HS days. I hope to have many hours under/in and about the truck. Going to take it to a trustworthy mechanic first with a list of things for him to review, then go from there. the 400 motor seems like a good pick, being a small block. Lemme wash it and I will post pics. Thanks all.
