Title: Gas Tank HELP
Post by: Bresnan01 on July 11, 2003, 10:06:00 pm
Hi Guys -

Just picked up a 1985 K20. Gas tank seems to be leaking. Is there any way to tell if it is 16 or 20 Gallons beside the obvoius way of going to the pump when she is almost empty??? Want to try and find out, and order it via catalog.

THANKS !!!
Bill

well im going through this right now. My tank started leaking and the straps looked like crap so i cut the rear one off where the leak was, it was just a small hole that had gotten rubbed into the tank. gonna be easy to fix. Im glad i checked before ordering a new tank. Id suggest you do the same tanks are 200$+ just make sure there is a 'gasket' between the straps and the tank. This is all of course your tank is in good condition and repairable.

Hey guys

The formula to figure gallons of any tank is;
Length X Width X Height (in inches) then Divide by 231

I know this may be hard on a odd shaped tank with bumps and dents and stuff as is fits in and around stuff but it will give you a very good idea.
The more perfect the shape of the tank the more accurate the formula. Try it on a fish tank. (I used to build fish tanks as a hobby)
Hope it helps.

basicly a big money pit, but a lot of fun.

You can buy you a fuel cell for cheaper than a tank or you can find you a keg.

I always thought it was 17 gal 20 gal or 23 gal that could come on these truck... but i may be wrong too. If your looking for a new tank i would just get the biggest tank, trucks arent easy on gas so it would help out not having to fill every could of days lol. Try going to JCwhitney.com and look there .. thay have some really good deals of body stuff. Good Luck

I buy my tanks from a local salvage yard that carries new Spectra Premiun tanks. $105 for tank and straps. Call your local junk yards alot of them are selling new aftermarket stuff now.
