Title: Check your tire pressure regularly!
Post by: 1979C20 on May 02, 2011, 05:05:21 am
So, I was about to go to work and I ended up glancing at my tire and thought it looked a bit rough. I tore the tread up offroading, but this was worse than when I got back. I figured it would be okay until after work. When I parked my truck at work, I heard air leaking. So I backed up a bit and it stopped. I got out and looked at my tire and it had a large crack in the side wall. I looked closer and found it was down to the steel on some parts! I had dropped my tire pressure to 25 from 35 while offroading. And It took a toll on my tires. It already had a bad camber on one side because they were used and This finished them off. I figured I could at least get home where I can put on of my old tires back on the rears and the pressure got too low from the leak and the tire shredded on the way home.

This is what my other back tire looked like, not TOO bad.

That sucks!  I'm happy the tire didnt come apart and trash the fender!    It'll be one of those things, you'll remember it from now on though.

Yeah. I rarely take my truck on the freeway, but I was fortunate it was on the street and that it was a rear. The tire slapped my wheel well a little bit, but it was only for like 20 feet. As soon as I heard my rim grinding on the road and the tire slapping my wheel well I pulled over and called my dad who brought his spare to me.

Be careful with tires everyone, they do have expiry dates stamped on them. :)

That tire was 2nd week of 2005. So, Guess what happened last week!!! ANOTHER one of those fire stones came apart on me. I had just gotten on the freeway in order to get home quickly, I wasnt over 50mph when the tread ripped off of my driver front tire. Pulled my inner wheel well up towards the tire, rim my chrome arch up, shattered my mirror, and dented my door. I am NOT HAPPY. I was able to limp it home on the steel bands. And getting that tire off the rim was ridiculous! So, I have my dads spare 31" tire and a 31" used tire in great shape on the rear and my 2 bald old old tires on the front, which are 30's. I'll get pics soon.

Weren't Firestones recalled in 2005 when all those explorers were rolling over?

i had a tire on the trailer go south just like the top pic did.  It had psi in it though, it was just too old.  Luckily though it blew up at dads work where they have a lift truck shop and a forklift to jack it up with.
