I have a 85 K20 that was orginally a C10. It has a 454 in it know and the front lip seals has a small leak. I got a new preformed gasket and I noticed that I will not be able to pull the pan with the cross member there. So should I remove the cross memeber, or just lift the engine? I feel like removing the cross memeber would be the ez way to do it.

doesnt the crossmember hold the motor mounts?

I'm in the process of putting a 427 (which is a 454 block) where a 350 came out of and there is plenty of room to take the oil pan and gasket off. Not quite sure what you are working with. Any pics?

You can get at it by easing the engine up, careful of the distributor. Dont take the xmember out.

take the cap off your dizzy, or pull it out completely just to be sure, IMO.

OK, thanks for all the input. By the way what is a dizzy?

As far as removing the crossmember, isn't your riveted on? Not impossible to remove but it would require some grinding or torches. I would not go that route.
Keep in mind that if your truck did not come from the factory with a BB it may still have the SB motor mounts in it. I believe this would place your oil pan a little closer to the crossmember than if you have the BB motor mounts.
If this is a truck you plan on keeping I would think about pulling the motor and replacing all the oil related gaskets (including the rear main seal and the timing chain cover seal/gasket).

You do not need to lift the engine up unless your engine mounts are toast.

How can I tell what mounts I have?
