Title: Help engin choice?
Post by: markus__mk on May 04, 2011, 11:27:33 am
Hi everybody. New here with many problems.

 I have a 81 a Chevy pickup (c10) with a diesel engine olds who collapsed. >:(
And the need to move forward with a good engine choice.

 I have found a 88a 454 TBI with TH700.
I'm very eager to swapped for it but do not know if it is really possible to get it into the truck.

Someone who made similar, what is required?

Or can I use something else.
I have a TH350 that fit Olds diesel but can I use it for any other engine?
 What do you think?
 Regards Markus (Sweden)

If you have access to the accessory brackets, tbi components, and everything that should be a great choice.  My only worry would be finding little parts in Sweden if you get into the project and find something missing.  Search this forum for "454 swap" and I think you'll find most of the information you need.

Welcome to the forum! The obvious answer would be an Olds  ;)  Not sure how plentiful Olds engines are over there, however I do have a couple of "internet friends" with Oldsmobiles...I know there are some over there.
You have pretty much everything you need to drop in an Olds & go. You didn't mention what you use your truck for or what your looking for out of the engine so what size you use would need to be determined. All you really need is a few wires, a distributor & a few little things...your mounts, accessory drive, ect. all can be used over.
The other option (going to a Chevy) would require quite a bit of other parts, however they should be rather easy to come by. I would say it really comes down to what you can do & what you can find at the right price. You could also use a "regular" Pontiac, Buick or Caddy onto your transmission...all of which fit rather nice on our trucks with a bit of work. Lorne

Hey thanks for the replies.

really good forum with interesting info.

I have found a olds 350 72a for sale that I thought about maybe the best choice?
I use the car daily, really nice car to ride in.
I pull no Especially heavy loads with it.
 Glide around the most.
When I bought it I took diesel only to run it cheap
Now has learned a bit more about Olds diesel and it was perhaps not the best choice. ???
But the car is in good condition so it was worth it anyway.

Have learned a lot about olds and it is quite easy to be tinkered with them.
And can easily imagine to purchase and use a olds again.

What I have most trouble with now is to find the engine specification that I can use
at inspection need proof of motor power and evidence of similar engine power in the Chevy.

Your looks really good, good power in the engine

If the block isn't damaged and you have the means, i'd store that 350 diesel block...they've got potential as a gasoline conversion block....
