Title: 86 K10 project :)
Post by: gotsmeuhh350 on May 04, 2011, 11:09:48 pm
I got my 86 exactly 2 months ago. Since ive owned it, ive did quite a bit to it. Some of the stuff isnt that hard, but im only 18, and dont know much about these trucks, but im learning.
Done:
-Cleaned engine bay a bit
-Battery
-Had mount made for alternator (long bolt that goes into the head, snapped off inside the head, and isnt coming out anytime soon)
-Taillights were burnt out
-Idle was waaay too high
-Sanded down drivers side of truck and painted flat black. still needs another coat, but looks good
-Pioneer CD player, speaker box behind seat
-Adrian Steel diamond plate toolbox
-Got 2 trim rings for rear wheels
-Painted rims

To do:
-Get a drivers side window (still)
-Weld tailgate hinge (rusted away and has to have a ratchet strap just in case to hold it up)
-Get a set of 16" rims, as i have a ton of 16" tires, but no rims. lol
-Get a set of good tires as well
-New windshield
-Paint the brush guard in either roll on bed-liner or appliance epoxy. still deciding... lol
-Rebuild transfer case, or get rebuilt one

Wishlist/Maybe Future:
-Locker for rear (limited slip sucks during winter)
-Maybe 2" or 3" body lift
-33's or 35's with a bit of suspension lift
-DIFFERENT GEARS! has 3.08 stock, and with 31's its like 2.78 or 2.88 now :(

I think thats it for right now, but if i think of something else, ill put it up.

Ill have to take some more pics tomorrow,
but here are the few that i have.

here is the day i brought her home:

here is her 350:), before i cleaned it up. lol
(http://i453.photobucket.com/albums/qq258/dmochty92/86350.jpg)

right now, it has 235's in the front and 31's in the rear. lol. because my 31 in the front had a sidewall leak, so i just took the fronts off my other truck:
it sucks cause i cant use 4x4:(

well i got the headlight buckets painted to match the truck. i have to find another passenger side one, and a grill because theyre both broke:

and i got the drivers side painted, and the rims as well. i think they turned out pretty good:

And thats what she looks like as of right now. you should have seen it before i painted it.
It had alot of patches of surface rust about 6" or so all over the bed, and the paint didnt match.
The first post has a pic, and thats what both sides looked like

Nice corral of trucks. Those universal transmission lines? Make sure those wires stay away from the P/S header.
Title: Re: 86 K10 project :)
Post by: gotsmeuhh350 on May 05, 2011, 07:28:25 pm
I think they are universal. The engine and tranny were rebuilt about 6x,xxx miles ago. It originally had a 305 and the guy before the previous owner put in the 350 and a new tranny. Hopefully we finish a job tomorrow, so i can finally get paid. That way i can get new plugs and wires for it. It doesnt really need them, but im not sure how long ago they've been in there. And i should do an oil change as well. And probably put gas in it too, because im sucking fumes. lol

I got the drivers side door panel sanded down and painted. I will put up a pic of it tomorrow, because its too dark right now.

yay. my transfer case is losing 2wd. how awesome. :( if i hit the brakes hard, it goes from 2wd, into neutral.
It doesnt show it on the shifter, but i have to stop and put the truck in neutral, then shut it off,
and go throught the gears of the transfer case, then i start it back up and it drives fine until i hit the brakes hard again.
Any ideas of what could be wrong? Or just the transfer case is junk?

It kills me that us guys in the rust belt have to deal with things like tailgate hinges rotting off our trucks.
Any pics of your 87?

yeah, michigan is a killer of vehicles. i dont have any right now, but ill be sure to take a few tomorrow.
and speaking of rust, ill show you guys the floor of my truck

well first is my door panel. the floor and rocker are the reason my door is covered in mud.

here is my floor from the top

and here are the pics of my 87. the beds kinda rusty, but the cab isnt in that bad of shape. but it runs, and it only really needs the tranny screwed with/or maybe rebuilt.

the front tires are the ones from my 86, but the 1 is crap.

I bought the 87 for $100 from my neighbor. It was his daily driver until he bought a new truck, and used this truck as a plow truck. he had the tranny rebuilt and then like 20 miles after, it just started pouring tranny fluid, so he parked it and it sat for 7 years. All i did, was put new plugs in it and dump some gas in the throttle body, and she fired right up.

i snapped a couple of pics of my friends 84 as well.

I also did some stuff to my truck today. i took out the grill, which was cracked to beat heck.
and put in a semi horn:) ill put the pic up soon.

i got the corner sanded, and ill probably finish the rest of the bed tomorrow. i might get the door finished,
but it depends on how much paint i have left. im going to tell everyone that this is going to be far from a show truck.
its my daily driver, and i probably wont do any patch panels on the body. im just sanding off the rust, and painting it.
i also found out that i have a cracked rear brake line on the passenger side. so ill probably have to have that fixed, as i go through a 12 oz bottle of brake fluid in 2 days. and i have a little squealing noise coming from the drivers side tire that goes away when i barely tap the brakes.
Title: Re: 86 K10 project :)
Post by: gotsmeuhh350 on May 30, 2011, 08:06:26 pm
heres what ive did so far. lol. ill get some poo for this, but it was from my very first truck, so i had to keep it.
and i was surprised because i didnt have to do any modifications for it to fit. i even used the nuts from the chevy emblem.

and i was hauling some trash to the dump for a guy, and he paid me a few bucks for gas, and he gave me 2 NEW window cranks.
he retired from gm, making window cranks and he had a few left so he gave them to me.

i was driving through town today, and my truck stalled. it flooded itself somehow. if i kept my foot on the gas, like 1/2 throttle, it would run fine
but if i let off the gas, it chugged alot. until i gave it some go-juice. lol. 2 guys had to help me push it off the highway and in to a parking spot along one of the main streets in town. it made me mad because a cop threatend to give me a $65 ticket if i didnt move my truck in 5 minutes. it was rediculous. i had to adjust the carb a bit, to get it to run as close to better as i could. and finally got it running right.

Post by: gotsmeuhh350 on June 07, 2011, 05:09:49 pm
thanks. youd be amazed at how many people like my truck until they look at the dash. lol. i decided that i since i cant find anywhere to mount
my CB, and that i dont smoke, i would cut out part of the ashtray with an airsaw, and mount the cb on the flip down part. and relocate the 12v outlet into the glovebox.
and so far, i got the ashtray part cut out, i just have to drill 2 holes to hold the CB in place. and drill another hole to hold the 12v outlet.
heres a few pics

and the cd player i put in. not the greatest job, but its better than having nothing to listen to. lol

and that ashtray was from another truck which was blue, so i had to paint it. (the same one i got the rims and tires from) and the 2 holes were drilled in it before i got it :( but ill probably cut my ashtray to make it look better.

Did you put that 12v outlet in or was it already there? What kind of antenna are you using and where are you going to mount it? I like the ashtray mount, good idea. I'm not a big fan of that particular Cobra but it's probably about the only one small enough to fit in there. I'm curious as to how well it works. No kicker I guess?
Title: Re: 86 K10 project :)
Post by: gotsmeuhh350 on June 16, 2011, 02:13:28 am
i put the 12v outlet there. i drilled a 1/2 in hole (biggest drill bit i had) and bored it out with my air saw. (not the best idea)
i picked up a magnetic antenna from walmart. (closest place around that had one) i just use it if my friends and
i are convoying around town. haha. i mounted the antenna on the roof, and ran the cable to the drip rail, and the screws
hold the cable in place, and i ran it down the a pillar, and under the dash.

i didnt really like the cd player that was in it, so i had one layin around that i decided to throw in.

and i found out i kinda need new front brakes. hah. so i picked up all 4 pads, i just gotta make 80 bucks to get new rotors.
because my truck hasnt had back brakes since ive owned it. lol

alrighty. brakes are done. new rotors, drivers side caliper, pads, wheel bearings, 2 brake lines, plus a tow, $300. picked it up yesterday, and this morning, i started cleaning out the warehouse i just bought. :) full of scrap. and heres a pic of the scale as i was getting weighed.
11400 pounds. but.. it was my truck full of scrap, my trailer also full of scrap, and my friends 84 full of scrap.
and heres the pics of the warn winch i just picked up.

and im picking up an adjustable hitch for the front of my truck. hopefully it will fit my truck, so i can
mount the winch to it, somehow. lol

i took the cb antenna off of my 88 freightliner (same one i got the horn off of) and i mounted it to the bar on my mirror.
ill have to get a pic tomorrow. but after i picked my truck up, my trucks having a little tranny issue. im guessing the linkage, but its not going into park right. it feels like the shifter doesnt go up all the way. but i dont know.

heres a pic of my truck currently. the cb antenna is on the drivers side mirror, and its alot better then the magnetic one. lol
(http://i453.photobucket.com/albums/qq258/dmochty92/0725111046.jpg)
well, on my way to the scrap yard, i hit a deer. a little buck. and he ran into the side of my truck, twice. the little trailer i was pulling hooked him, and rolled him on top of it, he did a flip, and fell off and stumbled then ran away. didnt do anything to my truck, other than a couple scratches.

today i picked up a new air filter and put that in. while i was at the scrap yard, i price a new windshield and a new transfer case. $40 for the windshield, and $140 for the transfer case. so ill most likely be picking them up sometime this week. i will for sure get a transfer case, but im not so sure about the windshield cause ive never replaced one. i might just have someone do it for me. and sometime this week ill be getting a coolant flush and a tranny flush.

ive checked there, and i dont think ill have enough time to save the money because i found 3 new things to buy:) they are my dads friends and they have been sitting for atleast 5 years. the tan one hasnt been plated since 92. the red one is in AMAZING condition. i think its a southern truck. the bed has the factory paint in the inside, and its faded, not scratched or anything. they didnt even use it as a truck. VERY little rust. and the blue one... had an engine fire. lol. i could use the blue one to fix my 86.
(blue one)

i know he wants to get rid of them. he said he would figure out a price and get back with me. i know the red one, (2wd)
would make a perfect summer truck. i just gotta find an engine and tranny for it. but it is in PERFECT condition for a truck in michigan. lol
and my dad will MURDER me when i bring them home. hahahah. ill probably have to take them all out to our property on the other side of town. but the bad thing, is there is no power out there. so i would have to use a generator to work on them.
Title: Re: 86 K10 project :)
Post by: gotsmeuhh350 on July 30, 2011, 10:47:25 am
come to think about it... i know a guy who has an engine and a tranny for $2000... a 4bt Cummins and an auto tranny. i dont remember which one though. but if it was a 700r4, that would be perfect for a summer cruiser. put a little bigger fuel plate, injectors, turn the injector pump up. then it would be awesome. lol

Post by: gotsmeuhh350 on July 30, 2011, 12:42:51 pm
it is pretty clean. the only bad part on the body is the drivers side fender cause of the dents. the rear wheel wells have almost no rust at all. and can easily be fixed with a small patch panel. the cab corner is a little rusty too, but the rocker is SOLID. i really hope i can get atleast that truck for the right price.

wow. i bought 2 boxes of the headlight adjuster screws/buckets at napa. they are $5.40 for 1 box!! rediculous. well atleast now, when i drive at night, i can look at more than the ground 5 feet infront of my truck. hahaha. well i was gonna pick up an oil filter and a box of oil, but i didnt have enough $ on me. so i might just stop at my friends shop and have him do it.

well i put in a new set of plugs today. does anyone know how hard it is to change the 3rd plug on the drivers side with hedman headers on?
almost impossible. i was not very happy. i picked up a vacuum gauge to help with my mpgs, (cant hear the motor cause of the radio. lol)
im picking up a 94 1/2 ton 2wd chevy here in a couple days, so i think this truck might just be used for a farm truck for a while. i know im going to use some of the parts off of it to fix up my 87. because i was looking the other day, and i found the frame had a golf ball size rust hole right behind the front shackle mount on the rear axle.
