Title: Farm Field Revival
Post by: mikek20 on May 06, 2011, 08:39:41 pm
My Grandpa gave me this 1982 chevy c10 when I was 15 years old for christmas. He was the orginal and only other owner of the truck. I kept bugging his ear off about letting me fix little things on it and finally he caved and gave it to me for christmas after sitting in his field for about 8 years. After dealing with a lot of hassle with 2 wheel drive and getting stuck in my dirt floor barn, I decided to take this to the next step. Now I have a 3/4 ton frame 4x4 k20 chevy after the last 4 and a half years of hard labor. There is alot left in this build and many more hours of fun. Pictures will post as soon as I figure out how to.

If you load them to photobucket they have an image link that you can copy and paste into your post. I'd give that a shot.

I posted another topic already but the pictures didnt post when I did, so here is my re-post. My 1982 chevrolet c10 given to me by my grandpa for christmas when I was 15 years old. After bugging his ear off about letting me work on it, he finally just gave me the keys and said merry christmas. Since then I have worked my time and money away to make the truck my brain has envisioned since I was 15. 4 and a half years later we are finally painting. So heres the build up until now. I will follow up with more as the build progresses.

Stripping the firewall of all the sealer, and crud built up over the years was a job itself.

got the new rocker welded in and started laying some mud. Also smoothed the drip rails out.

The firewall had a lot of attention. Well worth it in my opinion.

What a great feeling that is to take pictures of a newly painted cab to show off.
There are a few of us here that know that feeling first hand.

Are you doing single stage paint or Base, Clear ?

I love the color and am looking forward to future updates with your progress.
Great job and keep it up !!!

Yea its a base/clear. Took forever to choose the color. Actually tried a single stage last year and hated it. So many paint samples were involved in choosing.

Oh yes, assembly time is here.   ;D
It's so much more fun to be in this phase. Most things you're putting together are clean and you know you're on the rebuilding side instead of the tearing apart side.
Take lots of pictures and post updates as you can. We live to watch rebuilds !!   :)

Yes, the color can change a whole lot when you get it out in the sun. Taking pictures of the color inside your shop can be a challenge to say the least !!

How hard was it to remove the windshield?  Were you able to get it out without breaking it?  I'm about ready to do the same thing on my Suburban so I can paint it as well.
Title: Re: Farm Field Revival
Post by: mikek20 on April 06, 2012, 04:01:05 pm
I can answer that two ways. One is to say that it is doable to remove it with basic tools without breaking it. Tto address the other part of your question, i did break mine removing it. That was all my impatience and a small crack i already had in one corner.the Guy helping me had alot of patience and would of had it out if i just let him work his magic. We used a hood release cable without the sleeve on outside of it, poked hole in between seal and glass. And made a sawing action with cable through hole all the way around the glass. It just breaks the seal and pushes the rubber to one side so it all pops out.

Awesome build!!!!! Did you have any clearance issues with the 2wd cab on the 4x4 chassis as far as the  transfer case not clearing the floor? If so, what did you do to make it work, and do you have pictures of how you modified it? I have an '86 K10. I bought an '86 2wd cab to replace my 4x4 cab with since it has rust issues. My replacement cab is currently sitting on my garage floor and needs to be modified to fit my 4x4 chassis. My truck has a 4-speed trans. Looks like to me from the pictures that you posted of yours that an auto seems to fit a lot better than what mine will with the 4-speed trans. I bought a bolt in center section for the donor cab, but it looks like I need to cut the floor pan under the seat to make it work, and then find another donor cab that I can cut up and graft in some sheetmetal  under the seat to match up to the bolt in center. I'd like to see more detailed pictures of yours and see how it all comes together. GREAT JOB so far and keep the pictures coming!!!!! ....Joe

My 4x4 frame is an 84' with the straight transmission crossmember. When i put my cab on the frame it actually cleared. I did shim the crossmember though. Where the crossmember mounts to the frame with 4 bolts, i added 1/2" spacers between the crossmember and frame to drop the transfer case just enough to feel comfortable. My 2wd floor is the low hump, i left the 2wd floor in and made a hole in the floor for transfer case shifter. My linkage for it is all custom but works perfectly fine. I will look for any detailed pictures though.

Thanks! I'd love to see all the pictures that you have! I'll have to look at mine and see, but I'm sure that the 2wd cab that I have is going to have to be modified somewhat since I have a 4-speed. Maybe I'll get lucky and it won't be as big of a deal to do as I originally thought. Seeing yours at least gives me some hope! The replacement cab I have is also a low hump. I have a 4 inch lift on my truck and shimming the cross member down would help mine with drive line angles, especially since it's the short wheelbase. Love the build! Keep the pictures coming! ...Joe

Some people use a body lift to fix this problem, though I personally do not like body lifts, it might be a easy inexpensive solution for you if that is what you want.

I don't like body lifts either and don't want to lift my truck any higher than it currently is. I'll do some cutting and welding if I need to. I just want to see just how much cutting and welding is going to be involved. Looks like this conversion fit up really nice. ...Joe

So i finally got back to working on the chevy. I finished the seat frame to mount the dodge seats in, with fold down center. Made the seat frame out of square tubing and welded it to the factory seat tracks to slide as one bench seat. The passenger side of the truck is complete with working handles and window guts. Time to turn it around and do the driver side door.

What brand PN# are your roof clearance lights.  they look great.  are they smoked, and are they bright?

Shouldnt your Al plate holding your fans have holes with flaps to allow wind to push thru at higher speeds? Thats how I have seen it done... it looks like you would be killing the efficency of the radiator that with the plate designed that way.

In regards to the fan shroud question : im not really sure what your saying about the flaps, but on the bottom of the shroud is a cut-out for any extra air to travel all the way through.
In regards to the cab lights: i honestly dont know brand they are. But they are a smoked dodge factory replacement kit. They are relatively bright and shine amber, i wish they were white or LED but ive got plenty of time to make changes in the future. I think they look awesome on it though.

Nice progress but I think it's starting to feel a little neglect.  Got the bed, cowl hood and tailgate still needs a little blue paint.  A little more attention to the inside ya know finish the door panels. Ok I will stop picking on you. It's coming along nicely.

It's been awhile since I've updated so I figured I'd catch everybody up. I've been working on the bed lately and wiring up the interior and engine bay. Sanding body filler on the bed now. Hope to primer in the next few days. Then it's more sanding, more priming, more sanding, and finally I can spray some beautiful blue on the cowl hood and bed. I'll have some pictures after bed is primed.

There are some perks to working at a body shop i suppose. Even when its 27 degrees outside, i can be inside, warm and painting away.
Got sidetracked a little and JRconniek10 and i painted cowl hood and smoothed tailgate for his 2000 k2500, and visor for his dads 04  k1500 gmc. But now we can get back to blue stuff

just picked up a 89 model 700r4 tranny. freshly built. time to mate this drivetrain and move the truck under its own power. Pushing in and out of the garage is getting old.
Still need my lock-up kit and aluminum pan for it though.

That is a gorgious shade of blue! That looks exactly the same shade my truck was origionally and what color i have been trying to find for my 70 Chevelle convertable restore project.  What paint code is that color bro?
Title: Re: Farm Field Revival
Post by: mikek20 on January 29, 2013, 07:08:30 pm
Thanks.
Paint code is "8T7" its a toyota blue.

For the seats- i actually took the sliders off my factory bench seat and mounted them to the floor, then took 1 1/4" square tubing and made a full frame in that fit the bottom of the dodge seats without any mounts or frames attached to them. After that i welded the square tubing frame to the factory sliders. It took awhile but i got it done.

Really big fan of this build, it's been an amazing transformation so far.  I have to admit though - every time I see "Farm Field Revival" I immediately think of "Farm Film Report" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHkvD7-u7y8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHkvD7-u7y8) LOL   ;D

I haven't given up, just been doing small detail stuff lately and haven't had many pictures to post. I have most my wiring done and am in the middle of getting the bed prepped for painting.
I had some favors from a machinist and got sill plates and door trim made up. threw in some stainless hoses under the hood and now am making a new wiring harness.

PROGRESS is the word of the day. Had a nice weekend and got a chance to get some small stuff done on the truck. Put lockup kit in the tranny, and followed it with a new aluminum pan. Toped off some fluids. Installed the wiring harness for headlamps, finished up some small wiring odds and ends, put fresh gas and battery in. Fired it up for the first time since paint began.  May seem small to most but huge success to myself. Sat in the cab and listened to some classic rock for a moment of reflection. Just wanted to update on some progress. A few more small things to button up and we will go on a test run. Weather breaks and I can finish body work on the bed. Of course pictures will come as i move forward.

Looks great, how long did it take you ? And what did you have to do for prep ?
Title: Re: Farm Field Revival
Post by: mikek20 on March 22, 2014, 07:52:54 pm
Thank you. Prep was time consuming. It had a real old blotchy coating of undercoating..l used a small scraper to go with the floor indents and scraped up any loose pieces. Ground out any rusty areas and put some rust seal on areas as needed. Bought a cone shaped wire wheel and welded to a 4' thin rod and stuck in drill to get inside the mounts and scrape out rust.
Spraying the liner took maybe 40 minutes total. Very slow spraying stuff . Mixing and cleanup probably consumed 15 -20 minutes.

So I've been thinking, ya know when you're listening to the radio and the DJ forgets to flip a switch or something and it goes silent no music just dead air. That's kinda where Mike is with his truck right now lol. It's so close to being finished I think he needs a little motivation or encouraging, so I need little help pushing on him please. I know some is money issues blah blah don't we all. And he is married to my daughter that in its self can be a handful, lol. But your truck needs you too so sad to see it sitting in the corner dust covered no love and attention. Just so sad.

Finish that truck up mike you are nearly done with it! I've had so many hurdles building my chevy truck, so many, but I stuck with it and it's nearly done too. hang in there , and start carving out time to work on big blue you have there. Take one day at a time with it. No matter how big or small the job is for the day try to knock something out everyday or every other day.... My truck has cost as much as a new plastic filled chevy to build.....pretty much..... It has cost me time, a lot of dough, and I'm married with children too, see where I'm going with this? All in all though at the end of the day my wife is excited for me.... Not so much for the truck though lol. Anyways. I wanted to write this to light a fire under your butt to get er done.....just imagine what it will be like to drive?! And hear the roar of the engine! Your almost done man DONT GIVE UP...... I know what it's like to put hours and hours into something and your still short of getting it done and short on cash, I understand..... Anyways, get that truck done !

The seat is out of a 1994 Dodge regular cab truck. It was in my truck for years and when I changed mine back to stock I gave it to Mike for his we made a whole new frame for it and mounted it to the stock Chevy truck slider tracks so it bolts in the stock location. It sits really well and looks great in it. Not sure if there are any pics of the frame. Glad y'all like it sure been a lot of work in it.

I found a deal on some wheels and tires I couldn't pass up.
Bought 16.5x12" eagle alloys wrapped in 38.5x15.50x16.5 super swamped tsl boggers.
Of course they were just a touch too big and didn't clear up front, so I will be lifting the suspension a little bit more.

Really like the build. You've done a great job. I did learn some thing going through this build just now. I have been debating on taking my bed off to coat the bottom and for ease of access to the fuel lines while installing the fuel lines...I completely forgot that the quarter panels unbolt from the rest of the bed. I just hope it doesn't mess up the paint. Really like the build so far!

The bedsides do un- bolt but they are also welded in the back corner where the stake pocket goes to the floor and you would have to grind out the weld also there should be seam sealer all along the floor edge.

Budget has been a little tight in these final stages. Couldn't afford to rechrome bumper or buy a new one, so I utilized my resources. Stripped an old faded drop bumper down, etched and resurfaced. Then shot with a base clear. Actually came out alright. It will do for now.

I'd say the budget gets tight, I know my daughter is expensive (not my fault I never spoiled her) then not only do you have 1 beautiful daughter(my grand daughter) your about to have another one. So I'd say get used to a tight budget a house full of girls in your house isn't gonna be cheap. Your best bet is we keep the fridge in my garage stocked for when you need to sneak away and tell her "I got to go to your parents house and fix something". Good job on the truck its just about there this weekend maybe but for sure next weekend we are taking the trucks for a cruise.

Wow this truck looks great! I cant wait to get mine painted but since im not a painter or know anyone Ill have to pay so it will have to wait. But some fresh paint sure does do wonders! I like the bumper too i had a buddy do a color very similar to his commanche cause it matched his trim and its not a bad color to have on a bumper!

That bumper really makes the truck look good! Is it a 12 inch drop V?

Thank you. It's actually a 10" drop. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. Same color I used for shock bodies and diff covers so it all flows pretty good.

Today was a day that any gear head can appreciate. All the years of hard work have come down to a defying moment. Today I took the truck through town for the first time. In 2007 my grandfather gave me his 82 c10 truck for me to fix up. Slowly but surely that fixer upper turned into a frame off resto. I was so excited for the day I could take him for a ride in the now k20 truck he once knew as "old blue". Since his passing I realized that day would not happen. I now dedicate this truck in his memory.  A passion we shared that kept us close will now keep him with me forever. I cruzed the streets in his honor today, the first time the truck has seen pavement since 2001 when he last parked it.  Thanks to all the followers for your support and encouragement throughout the Years.

You know Mike that your little girl will one day be driving one or both of these trucks. "Should I drive dad's truck or use Grandpa's? Decisions, Decisions".... ;D ;D ;D

Well actually Mike and my daughter are gonna have granddaughter #2 in July if not sooner and  that will make 6 grand kids for us by Sept. So she may have to fight for seat time in Pappy's truck.

:) Or you could start right now and pick up a truck for each one! :) :) Congrats to all involved with the incoming baby! :)

It was gorgeous out today. The father in-law and I decided to get the trucks out and hit a show. The first show the blue Chevy has been in attendance. Brought home a trophy. Was very rewarding to enjoy all the hard work.

Hi
Fist of i wanted to say WOW what a beautiful truck!!!
I was wondering exactly how you mounted those guages in the oem guage panel I'm currently working on my square back and think those style guages would look beautiful.
Thanks
Dennis

Congrats on the trophy Mike! :) That just validates all your hard work. You can tell JR that he would have got the trophy but he didn't have a stock front bumper on it. He needs to sell me that Warn enforcer bumper and go get a new stock bumper!! ;D I will be holding my breath on that one....... 8)

Thanks guys.
On the gauges I actually took the OEM bezel and cut the recessed rings off flush from the back side. Then the gauges actually fit into it perfect. The clamps on the back side of the gauges held them tight to the bezel.
Don- I've barked up that tree for years. I wish I could get my hands on that bumper. He's hard to persuade.

Very proud of the way the truck came out its been a long time coming, and for him to get a trophy first time out and all the positive comments from people at the show means a lot but the compliments from this forum from guys that know exactly what effort it takes to build our trucks means the most. So thank you to everyone here. Oh and no way am I gonna sell my bumper, but I would love to find a couple more of them.
