Title: Where to find the best trucks location and how?
Post by: Cheyenne on May 10, 2011, 10:57:23 pm
I really like the chase of finding a old vehicle traveling whatever it might take to get it. My 80 k10 had Alabama plates and title. I found papers in the truck saying it was a Washington st truck. It's solid I meet the guy in indianapolis he had just moved to the Midwest.

That being said, I always wanted to find a solid rust free truck from the south, and bring it by shipper or myself. What states have the best solid trucks that are not to far from Chicago? Like az would be to far, and to pay a shipper if I found one on eBay be a lot.. I really like the hunt, as there always somebody out there wanting to sell there rig, some mark em at good prices. I pretty much just know the area around me, and the trucks here get abused by salt and weather.. You can always replace a engine or transmission, but to me having a good frame and body is most important.. I'm also a body guy over a doing the regular work under the hood..

To me eBay is overpriced by far.. Craigslist is s shot in the dark, I've done good on there but would only know how to search the local areas. I always here people bringing up trucks from the south etc never understood how and what states are best on the body

theres no set rules or logic really.  its hit and miss. all depends on the effort you put forward.  some people browse craigslist state to state, ebay,  word of mouth, auctions, friends/family, truck forums, and often times pick up the phone and start playing detective.  you would be suprised what happens when you start getting some connections.

Yeah I know, connections be nice trucks down south are cheaper as is everything.. So buying rust up here at the same price makes me mad a bit. That being said, even if a truck from the south does not always end up nice.. They get rust to.. I guess your right I just go crazy on eBay and craigslist to know end and yet like you say it's all about connections.. Which I have none lol my Grandpa did he had his own dealership.. He go all over this is pre Internet

Craigslist is your best bet.  That is where I literally stumbled on my yellow extended cab in Michigan no less.  Use Searchtempest and type in what you are interested in.  My search includes c10, c20 and c30, I go out to 250 miles radius of my zip code

I've seen good trucks in Iowa, Kentucky, and here in Tenn. where I live. These states shouldn't be too far from you.

It's about finding them @zieg85 sometimes going north isn't always bad you made out good!! Michigan isn't far from us.. When you say searchtempest what do you mean? The other guy your right Tennessee is actually my favorite state I make there in 7 hours 4 and some change to Kentucky etc.. I can always have some mechanical work done but frame and body for me is everything. When I look at a classic car I always go under the car back to front always.. Check frame and floor etc.. Than magnet on the body few other things I do check the body.. I always use a magnet I have it's not to weak or strong perfect for checking the body.. I have a good truck but I always think going south and getting one the grass be greener and I get my dream truck!! Zieg what you pay for yours nice!!

There are a lot of rust free gold mines in Az. People selling practically rebuilt trucks for 4-6k and selling old junkers for 5-6 hundred.

Usually eBay prices are high but happy you made out good usually I say this is no the region you want to buy a truck from. There exceptions to the rule though ya know. Also not every southern truck is mint, just better chances there not as rusty they lay the salt on thick out here..

when I searched for mine I searched the somewhat local large cities on craigslist, car soup etc then i did a nation wide search when nothing turned up. it's hard to shop from pics but an originial truck is a little more telling of condition. I looked every where as I was looking for specifically a 2wd swb manual trans truck in restorable condition 73-80. the swb option seems to about double the price. I live in northern wi (deep in the rust belt) and have seen several decent condition square body trucks around the area due to limited use. I guess what I am getting at is that they can be found anywhere just get a shipping estimate when you find one.
