Just want everyones opinion on a good cam for my 350. Its in my 76 3/4 ton 4x4. I want something with good low end grunt but want to keep the engine virtually stock for now. It currently has a performer EPS intake with edelbrock 650 thunder avs carb, msd ignition and long tubes. The bottom end and heads are stock and I would like to keep it that way for now. A buddy suggested a comp cams xtreme energy xr268 with a set of valve springs. Any suggestions?

Why don't you want to update the heads?
-
Basically just to keep the cost down. One day I plan on doing the whole engine but for now I want a little more bang for my buck.
-
It's not really worth going with that cam and stock heads. It's like heavy breathing into a paper bag ya know?

Been there, done that.

Like vile says I would hold off until you are able to do the heads, shop around for a deal.
-
how many miles on the engine, intended purpose, budget.
-
If your using stock heads I would use a cam the complies with the limits of the stock valve train as well. I dont remember what model my cam is but its a comp cams and it was "the biggest cam I can get with stock valve train". Ill grab the receipt when I get home from work. Its got a great rhythm and throaty sound from the duration. My idle sits around 550-650 depending on temperature.

How many miles? I have no idea. The truck has almost 500 000kms on it. The engine isn't original it was dropped in with a fresh rebuild about 4 years ago. According to the guy I bought it off anyway. My intended use is more low end power with a noticeable idle. Not really sure on a budget until I do mote research. C20 if you could find that cam that would be awesome! Thanks.

I really like the cam. Make sure you buy cam and lifters because if you use a new cam with old lifters youll flatten it because of the different chemical properties. But i would definitely recommend it. I should be home in an hour or so and ill get the recipt. I think its a 460lift 240 duration, but I dont remember

I posted this on the wrong page before so hefd it is now.
I found my cam in an old post of mine. http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=72&sb=0 (http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=72&sb=0) I love it. It cost me 140 at my local lopers performancr shop.

I like my 214/224 .442/.465 112lsa cam I ran the same grind in the 305 I had in my 82 trans am. Summit sells a kit with it for like $90 cam and lifters part number is sum-1103. I ran the summit one in my car for 3 years and am running the eglin version in my truck.
-
Thanks guys. I like the look of that kit c20 posted. I am really gonna have to think about this. If I had the time I would order it tomorrow. Ugh too many projects at one time.

This is the best bang for the buck and about as big as you can go with stock heads...

Those two cam profiles are an intresting comparison of a single pattern and dual pattern camshaft's. Ive always believed that a nice dual pattern is the way to go. but ive met allot of folks who use a single pattern. I know the best way to wake up an old ford fe engine is use a dual pattern cam to help the exhaust scavenging. the fe heads have a poor exhaust runner design.

Think of it in a simplistic manner...I guess dumb yourself down. Some people look at it like what comes in goes out and all variables are based on the mechanics of the engine... Therefore any flow changes would be based on deisgn changes of the runners., ports, valve size, compression ratio etc.
In some peoples minds when you change the cam profiles on I E you have more variables...
If that makes any sense.
