Hey Im trying to decide what mufflers to get for my Truck. Its a 1980 K10 lifted with a rebuilt 77 350 with Hooker headers.
When I put in the new motor I put on Flowmaster Super 10's on the sh*tty old rusted pipes, Bad choice lol they say right on the box "not street legal" They sure attract alot of unwanted attention to my truck especially from the police for some reason... lol sooo loud.
My trucks in the shop again im going to redo the exhaust from the headers back, I want some mufflers that are quiet but sounds good and arent annoying loud like mine. I want sorta a deep tone that gets louder at higher rpms. I had glasspacks before my motor swap, and there ok but I want a better tone. My buddy says get Thrush welded or turbo mufflers. Any suggestions???? thanks lol ??? ::)

Magnafow! I run a magnaflow on my yukon and it had a nice deep sound and mellow at cruise and idle but screams at wot. I'm running a cherry bomb vortex muffler on my k10 and its also a straight through design muffler its tame at idle and cruise but really talks to you when you get on it.
-
Flowmaster super 44s. I had headers and true duals with those on my 98 with 350. Nice grumble at idle and low rpms but when you get on the gas, it sounded really pissed off. I loved them.
-
Yeah my friend has a 44 on his S10 and its not bad it sounds pretty good, and what magnaflow muffler is that? Im looking at these mufflers on youtube lol. Thanks for the input guys
-
Also I dont want it to be too to loud but still loud enough to be noticed (if thats possible) Gotta have it sorta loud with a big old Chevy! ;)
mines just toooo loud atm, im already not allowed my truck on my schools property because the neighbors and all the teachers complain, not that it matters I grad this weekend lol. Im sorta leaning towards Magnaflow now after hearing some and Thrush still
-
I have had cherry bomb, thrush, dynomax, some others and now have magnaflow. The magnaflows are the best yet, pretty quiet at cruising speed and get plenty loud at wot and no drone at all. I have flotech headers 2.5" duals with a single dual in dual out crossflow muffler.
-
I have cherry bomb vortec's on my 350, 2/34" duals dumping to 4" tips, no x or h pipe and they sound awesome. Maybe a little loud for some peoples taste, but I like them.
-
i love my magnaflows!!!!
-
Magnaflows or Moroso.
"It's Only Money...Right?!"
-
I'm running Magnaflows on my burb now. I was a flowmaster fan for ever. The short of it....I am getting ready to yank these things out and get me another set of flows. These things sound like glass packs when i put a load on the engine. Idling and wide open, they sound great. But part throttle cruising with a slight load on it, they sound like a cheap ole glass pack I could have bought for 1/3 the money. I have Hooker comp headers with 2.5" pipe back to the mufflers, then 2.5" pipe run back and turned over the rear end. Definitely NOT the sound I was looking for. I know it's all a matter of personal preference, but my one and only experience with magnaflows has not been a good one. And thus, I will never buy them again. My biggest regret is I now have to cut into a brand new exhaust system to patch a new set of mufflers back in.
-
Ill see if I can get some videos up tomorrow of my truck with the vortex muffler and my yukon with the 14in magnaflow. I recently put long tube headers and offroad y pipe on the yukon so ill post both videos. The headers made it pretty obnoxious under wot but still tame any other time.
-
here is one with the truck but the camera changed the sound it has a deep bass tone to it that the camera cannot pickup.

i dont have one yet of the yukon with the headers but here is one from about 2 yrs ago right after i had the exhaust done. again the camera couldnt pick up the bass :/

I heard some Magnaflows on a BBC truck a few months ago and it sounded so sexy. I was so close to going out and buying a set for my truck. They let you hear enough of the motor at idle and under light throttle they gave a little rumble. WOT wasn't even that crazy either. It was all around smooth.
-
I have dynomax superturbo's on my '90, I like the sound. They came with lifetime warranty, on my 3rd one.
-
I had a dynomax; it rusted through in about 6 months
-
Ive just got a pair of small little 2"x2' or so cherry bomb glass packs. And they sound great at idle. I have a pretty choppy cam. But its just puttputtputt puttputtputt putt puttputt pupputty putt putt all day long. Deep tone. Love it. And it screams when i floor it. Ill see if i can find a camera that can actually record the sound. Because my phone distorts for some reason.
-
Ive heard many people like the Super 44's by flowmaster. In their webpage they are listed under "Loud". Would they get you in trouble?
-
I had super 44's on my 79 and never got in any trouble with them.
-
I have a pair of 8" glasspacks coming off headers. It's as quiet as a mouse. ;)
-
Hahaha I bet those glasspacks are quiet.. I had glasspacks on mine but I want a deeper tone like Screamin was saying the bassy tone, I just love that so much I want it for my truck, no more obnoxiously loud. Im not sure about the 44's they probebly wouldnt be too loud I havent really done much research on other Flowmasters other then the Super 10's I have and the 40 on my buddys 2001 S10. I sorta want something different now but then the decal on my back window would be pointless.. haha. And yup its only money lol
And thanks Screamin86, I like the sound on both your rigs there nice. What brands the vortex? I subscribed and added you as a friend on youtube hope thats alright 8)
-
yeah np. the vortex is a cherrybomb brand muffler its a straight through type muffler and i got it for free from my cousin so i couldnt complain. its a big heavy muffler though and gives a very diff sound under light throttle cruise.
-
my dually has turbo glass packs they have a good sound to them heres a link to a youtube video i did that has it running its queit when going down the road but when u hit the gas they wake up my friend can hear me from half a mile a wayu which is the end of our street if i rev the motor its not to loud it draws attention from cops"aka the dounut eating pigs" lol but it is a good start if u havent decided yet. also i have a 366 big block with true dual and extended tube headers it might be quieter on you vehicle since you would have to have catgs to pass inspection

You need to tighten your alternator belt. It was flapping around like a fish out of water.
-
yeah ive tightened it since then that was when it was parked after we put the motor in
-
Nice truck! I want a dually of these years, I love duallys. And it sounds good too thanks for the vid and the input.
I made up my mind with Magnaflow, my trucks at my buddys Dad's shop where were doing all the work and my buddys Dad has a 93 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 and he comes by and talks then head up to the house and really opens it up going up the hill and it sounded soooo good, so when we went up to the house I crawled under the truck and it has a Magnaflow so im going to figure out what model and stuff. Thanks for the help everyone. I cant wait to hear my truck once im done
-
well good luck and thanks for the comment

Thrush weld mufflers work great on my '82 with headers and true duals
-
My vote goes for a flowmaster 50 series. They are nice and deep at idle and cruising, get on it and they bark nicely.
-
i had the dynomax welded ultraflos on my el camino. rumble at idle and LOUD under full throttle. good flow at the expense of johhnie law watching you.
-
I've got the Thrush welded on right now. I had some Purple hornie glasspacks first.
The thrush haven't been broken in really but I've been told once they have, they sound alot better. As of right now, pretty mellow cruising and wakes up when I'm on it. I can tell they have the potential sound I'm looking for. They were recommended to me so I tried 'em out. I'd go with those or the thrush turbos.
I ditched the purple hornies because it was just a short time set up until I had the funds for a better system. They were header back, loud as heck, but I wanted either an H pipe or X pipe set. If you want the noise go that route.
I can't remember the article I found online, but it had a diagram of mufflers by sound and performance. The strait flow were the loudest, performed the best. The center to offset was next. Then the offsets. Then the offset to dual. Something along those lines. They also had them by length.
-
How close are the super 10s to running open headers? They really that loud? I was thinkin of gettin some for my 454 but I don't want it to be that annoying haha,I had dual 40 series right now, they sound pretty nice but not loud really! Thanks man and good luck
-
Thanks for the input everyone, im still soooo confused what to get haha, I was set on the Magnaflow set up but now thinking thrush turbo I heard one and loved it, Way to many choices!! I'm thinking im fairly set on Thrush.
And 84Scottsdale454 they are definitely close to open header, if you don't want annoying then dont get the super 10's, simple as that haha i'd keep the 40's. Mine are sooo obnoxiously loud and all the time too, I loved it at first everywhere I drive heads turning and people staring at my truck, screaming up the road to my school everyone outside stops and looks hahaha but now it's getting sorta old, also waaay to much cop attention, I have had a few tell me to fix my exhaust or tell me to go home and that sort of stuff never actual tickets though luckily just warnings. I should have realized when the boxes for the super 10's say "Not for street use, race applications only" ;)
-
lol man, thanks for the reply! i had a yamaha r6 and put a gp race muffler on it and it was cool at 1st but i felt 10x better when it vibrated itself back off lol! chinese parts these days hehe
-
I ran the 10 series on my 82 trans am for awhile and it is obnoxious. Maybe ok for a weekend toy that you don't drive far for any period of time but after even 10min of driving I got a headache. Mine stoped at the axle with no turndowns and no h or x pipe.

I think it was the carbon monoxide rather than the noise that gave you that headache....thats why I had to put tailpipes on my truck.
-
I put turndowns on it and it helped but it was so loud it sounded like a jackhammer in side the car.
-
Yeah exactly it's way to obnoxious for a daily driver as i found out lol and I had tail pipes too. Even on the highway it got irritating. I'm still going to keep them though for a different vehicle down the road.
A buddy at my work bought 2 Flowmaster super 44's for his 350 S10 but never used them so hes going to sell them to me, he says there a deep tone so I guess we will see! That solves my muffler problem though im pretty happy about it :D now I just need to finish my truck and get it back on the road.. lol
-
you should try Moroso Spiral Flow Mufflers my Friend has them on his truck and his truck has a 383 with 3" exhaust and it sounds great. when he is going around town is really quite. but when he get on it it get louder but not to loud it sound like a truck should sound. going down the highway it sounds nice.

Thrush weld mufflers work great on my '82 with headers and true duals
Ive got the same set up on my truck now. has help up great. been on there for about a year and a half. i used these after the mufflers http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=0&products_id=3821&ab=15803&recordID=80&vehicle=&orig=15803 absolutly loveeeee the way they look
Sounds awesome. Truck was an auto at first but then convert to stick. the sound difference was noticeable. this was all done with the same exhaust so keep that in mind with peoples opinions of sounds.
