i repainted my rims about 3 months ago and used a spray paint called hammerite. It worked great and was only like 3 bucks a can.It took 4 cans of paint,3 wire brushes and 2 afternoons to do it but the end result was some good lookin rims

I didn't realize it but i was the one who originally posted about the paint.i thought it sounded kinda familiar........

Has anyone used a rust conversion paint product after bushing the wheels? The '78 I will be working on has serious skank rust. I plan to wire brush with an angle grinder but will just degrease the back side. I plan to put the converter paint wearever I can't get the grinder or hand brush in.
Any thoughts?

If you have heavy rust a wire wheel tends to burnish/buff the rust and not remove it.
Glass beading or sandblasting is the best method if you have it available to you.
Whatever method you use make sure you get some sort of metal prep and scrub the bare metal with it prior to paint. Use a Scotch brite pad to scrub with, make sure you follow the directions and wear gloves. Metal prep is an acid that destroys the remaining rust prior to painting.
If you can find a primer with a Zinc Chromate base they are the best for rust prevention.
If you can find an old "lazy susan" they work great to slowly spin the wheel on to paint it.
