Title: name this steering component

In the process of tearing up my truck. Came across this steering component that seems to be leaking out power steering fluid. How do I go about this? I'd like to take care of it while the motor is out so I have all the room I need. Is there just a gasket I need to replace? Or do I have to get a whole unit? If so, what's this unit called? you talking about the pump ?  or  in between there?

steering gear box. its easier just to replace it. sure it wasnt just the hoses leaking?

I don't think there's a pump anywhere here in the pic. Gear box sounds about right. I'm 95% sure it isn't the hoses. Whatever it is, it's been a chronic thing, slowly leaking. Right before I pulled the motor, it was making a whining noise already letting me know the fluid was on the lower end. I'm thinking it's leaking right where the steering knuckle meets up with the gear box unit. Thing is, I don't know how to go about tearing this thing apart.

Extreme 4x4 just did a walk through on gm gear boxes. Wish my dvr didn’t screw up could of tried to link it on a web page but I cant even help ya out I havnt worked on one yet

get a manual to see how to take the old one off, go to the parts store, ask to see the rebuild kit and check out the instructions.

I know for the 4x4 boxes, there are two versions and you have to scrape 30 years of crud away to see the casting number. Not sure if thats true for the 2wd

I would start with a pressure wash, or at the least some Castrol Super Clean, a parts washing brush,and some elbow grease. I just replaced the box on my 86 K30. It was a little bit more than twice as much to replace it than it was to reseal it. Plus it was allot less work. Problem I ran into is I ordered it by application. Got the wrong box. Got it all torn off, had to reorder it, got yet another incorrect box. Gave NAPA the old box to compare. Turns out it matched the box used up until 79! Got the correct one to match, and popped it on in a couple hours.
