Title: on this date in history...
Post by: Lt.Del on July 21, 2011, 04:28:58 pm
July 21st is quite an historical date in U.S. history.
Not only is the day famous for Neil Armstrong's famous, "...one giant leap for mankind" comments when humans first stepped foot on a body of land that wasn't the Earth, but, this day will also be famous now because it marks the end of U.S. involvement in manned space flight, since, at 5:56am this morning, on this great date in history, the final shuttle left space and came to Earth for the last time.

Also, 150 years ago today, the nation realized that the Civil War was not going to be decided in just a matter of hours while citizens picnicked on the Virginia hillside along Bull Run creek watching the northern soldiers fight the southern soldiers at a now-famous town called Manassas rail road Junction.  The chaotic retreat of the Yankee soldiers back across the Potomac made it apparent that it was going to be no walk in the park.
