Headers into seperate pipes, muffs at the very end. They come out right before the rear wheel.

This week has also marked the first time a plug boot melted due to heat and close proximity to my header. The plug that fouled/boot that melted is on the drivers side. The same side the smoke is coming from. I replaced the boot and plug, heat wrapped a 7 inch stretch of header and put a heat sleeve over the boot.

It started smoking at a stop light after 20 minutes of hot hot driving.

What engine? Carb or TBI? Smog equipment? Losing oil? Rich smelling exhaust?

I'm at work still but I just went out and checked how it smelled. It smells like unburned fuel. Even if a piston ring goes out, wouldn't there still be combustion taking place?

I know it had some blow by when I got it...but it was always a normal amount for a truck its age.

Its a 1978 350 5.7L auto trans. No smog stuff, headers to dual exhaust.

Have you adjusted your air/fuel mixture? do you still have the stock exhaust manifold and qjet? Check to.see if.any of your plugs are fouled or if theres oil on them. It will still combust with oil leaking in, but it can be weak and it could gunk up the valves. Grab a squirt bottle full of water, start the truck and let it get to operating tems, then squirt a jet of water on to each of the header tubes one at a time. If its a good strong cylinded it should evaporate almost instantly, if its a weak or dead cylinder tghe water wont evaporate as quickly.

Stock intake and qjet, but rebuilt recently by me.its been idling high the past few days...dunno why. I'm gonna check all my wires and plugs.

Oh...its not the stock exhaust manifolds, its an actual header.

I don't think my choke is operating properly... the choke rod and its coil seem off. I don't think they're adjusted properly.

Wouldn't it be strange for that to only affect the driver's side?  It sounds to me like you might want to do some engine diagnostics.  Compression test, leakdown test, RPM drop (one plug wire at a time), etc.  If you've been blowing smoke for a while, you might want to find out what's up with that even if its not related to this problem.  It might just be a valve seal.
