Title: Wiring and Brake Questions! Noob!
Post by: AJII on August 05, 2011, 06:11:05 pm
Hey Guys,

My Dad and I recently acquired an 85 K10 with a blown engine. We're putting in a carb'ed 5.3 and I have a few questions about wiring and other misc things..and I'm sure as time goes on I'll have a lot more questions!  ;D

We noticed on the front brakes that the outside pad was not contacting the rotor, the inner pad was doing all the work. Would this be a bad caliper or bad master cylinder? It's doing the same thing on both sides.

The vacuum ball thats on the driver side..what does this do? Right now, it's connected to the windshield wiper fluid bottle, but this doesn't seem correct?

And I believe this is the wiring for the oil pressure sender and dummy light? Am I correct? The plug on one is new, but they are connected.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Sounds like both your calipers are bad.  I'd replace both w/ reman'd or new and w/ new pads.  They aren't that expensive.

Can't help you on the wiring.  Someone will be along to help you on that.

Rusty

P.S. Welcome from Alaska

The round plug is the oil pressuer gage / light. The other works the choke, its been a while since I have messed with one but it has something to do with the choke.
The brakes sound like the slides are stuck. Pull the calipers off, and compress them. If they return smoothly I would try wire wheeling the slides / bolts etc. Lube them up with brake grease, do pads and rotors if they need it though.

As blazin said, if memory serves me right, the second pic is for the fast idle electonic cam for the carb.

The smaller is an oil pressure switch.  It completes the circuit for the choke heater so that the heater starts to open the choke once the engine is running (once oil pressure builds).  Electronic cam???

Thanks guys!

I bet all of you are right on the money about the slides. The entire underside of the truck was covered in mud, so I bet they are caked and stuck.

I dug around the harness some more, and found what I believe to be the other plug for the oil sending unit, it's a rubber connector just like the other, but has just one pin instead of two.

Thanks for all your help!
