Title: Driveshaft clearance
Post by: muddpuppy01 on August 21, 2011, 08:51:50 pm
My truck is a 83 k20 long bed camper special all stock. When I got the truck it had a 400 in it. I had to swap it out due to someone leaving out 5 of the transmission bolts out of the bell housing. I ended up putting a monster 700r4 with their deep pan. When I went to put in the front shaft back in there was maybe very little clearance. I cannot put my fingers through the space between the pan and shaft. Do y'all think I have enough clearance still or would you recommend swapping over to a stock pan.

Used the original cross member only changed out the adapter for the tcase. Everything lined up good on reinstall using the same holes from before.

Would lowering the crossmember with some spacers help?

new springs is not going to work I am over with dealing with lifted trucks for now trying to keep what mpg I have now which is not much even with the 700r4 vs the th400.

I dont think he meant lift it  I think he was saying maybe your front springs are sagging. And leaf springs wont affect MPG

im with capt. it does look close to the trans but you’re going to flex that much to the side also the spacers might make a difference if you put them back on top

I didnt even think about the spacers. Yes, they should go back on top because you dont have any lift. that will raise the transmission up.

Your transmission mounts look old too. New ones will raise it a little.

In the 6th picture in your photobucket album, the driveshaft doesnt even look bolted in. That can make a difference too.

Didn't even look at that picture Beastie,  Spacers are not on the correct side for a factory truck, they should be flipped.

would the drive shaft really move side to side that much if it did i would think ti wouldnt move side to side so changing the pan wouldnt do anything. But im still learning maybe someone else can help with this

the movement side to side aint much unless you flex the suspension by rock crawling lol. dont know why i didnt say anything about the spacers before i saw them just didnt think nothing of it

thanks I was wondering about the spacer. When I took them off they were on top, but noticed on when putting back in the that the frame had marks from where they were before. I have to switch it around then. Yes the driveshaft was not bolted up for the pictures but it was sitting in the cups of the yoke and on the flange ring.
