Has anyone checked to see if a newer style (88-9?) chevy rear bumper would fit these older trucks?
Obviously it would need custom brakets which I am 100% fine with (going to have to do that any way since I have a 1.5" body lift). Just wonder if the bumper would look somewhat decent and give it a slightly updated look. I wish I had one to get the dimensions and rough shape to check fit, but I don't. But the newer style bumpers are much easier to come by too.
Any input welcome.

I think the 88+ bodies were narrower by a few inches....So I would think the bumpers are also...

i think there is a truck around here where i live that a guy put one one but im not real sure since i only saw it on a dually going down the interstate but the truck i think that has the bumper is parked and forsale

I have seen them on our trucks. I have not looked under to see how it was done however they look nice on them.

My brother put one from a 90+ on his 82 cuz he got for free and his 82 didn't have a bumper or roll pan on it. I didn't like how it looked. It was narrow and too roundish shaped.

Thanks for the input gentleman. My preference is to put the correct chrome style bumper on it, but if I cant find a good used on may consider the newer bumper route.....worst case if I dont like it, its easy enough to change.
Anyone have any pics for reference?

What you may have seen is someone using an 89-90 Blazer rear bumper on a 73-87 truck. It has more of a roll pan design and closely resembles the 88-98 Chevy truck rear bumpers. However the blazer bumper would fit perfectly on a 73-87 because the blazer is the same width. I happen to have a perfect 90 K-1500 blazer rear bumper that I bought to use on my 84 truck restoration, but I changed my mind and went with a new repop step bumper instead.
A pic of what a blazer rear bumper can be seen in this autotrader link I found. http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=p&car_id=305864001&dealer_id=66595483&car_year=1989&systime=&doors=&model=BLAZER&search_lang=en&only_photo=1&start_year=1989&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&highlightFirstMakeModel=&search_type=both&distance=0&min_price=&rdm=1315056286685&drive=&marketZipError=false&advanced=y&fuel=&keywords_display=&sownerid=1394719&lastBeginningStartYear=1981&end_year=1991&showZipError=y&make2=&certified=&engine=&dma=NORFOLK-PORTSMTH-NEWPT_NWS&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&body_code=0&isFlashPlugin=true&transmission=&default_sort=priceDESC&max_mileage=&color=&address=23323&sort_type=priceDESC&max_price=&make=CHEV&seller_type=b&num_records=25&cardist=2269&standard=false&rdpage=thumb (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=p&car_id=305864001&dealer_id=66595483&car_year=1989&systime=&doors=&model=BLAZER&search_lang=en&only_photo=1&start_year=1989&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&highlightFirstMakeModel=&search_type=both&distance=0&min_price=&rdm=1315056286685&drive=&marketZipError=false&advanced=y&fuel=&keywords_display=&sownerid=1394719&lastBeginningStartYear=1981&end_year=1991&showZipError=y&make2=&certified=&engine=&dma=NORFOLK-PORTSMTH-NEWPT_NWS&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&body_code=0&isFlashPlugin=true&transmission=&default_sort=priceDESC&max_mileage=&color=&address=23323&sort_type=priceDESC&max_price=&make=CHEV&seller_type=b&num_records=25&cardist=2269&standard=false&rdpage=thumb)

Rainman,
That is just a factory bumper that is on the Blazer. It is what would have came with the pickup if it was ordered with a bumper. Step bumpers were added by the dealers, so the truck was ordered without a bumper if it had one.
-
I used to have one on my truck. When I switched beds I used a blazer bumper instead. The newer bumpers rub the bed if you don't basically push in the sides for clearance. At least that's how it was for me.
-
You would think some one would reproduce the original step bumpers . I know they were dealer installed but most of the pickups had them.
-
There were no "original" step bumpers, they were 90% dealer supplied. Depending on where you bought your truck you could have a number of different bumpers available.
-
I know they were dealer supplied but the ones i'm thinking of were so common that nothing else looks right to me. Up here in NY i've seen every single part imaginable for these trucks come up for sale except for a decent looking original style step bumper. I think you know the ones i'm talking about .
