It is the low vacuum switch for your trans, and yes it needs manifold vacuum. It unlocks the TC when you mash the gas and create a low vacuum signal.

Thanks everyone for the input! Guess I'll trace the wiring and see if it is plugged up to the transmission, and if so, guess I'll get some vacuum going to it. Thanks again for the help!

As you can see from the link I posted above that is not the low vacuum switch for the trans. The vacuum switch on the pass side of the firewall is the tip in vacuum switch for an ESC spark ignition system. The low vacuum switch for the torque converter clutch lock up is behind the brake booster on the drivers side and looks similar.

Good call Vile. I stand corrected.

Ditch that ESC ignition  ;)

Thanks Vile, saves me some time trying to follow the wiring and/or trying to hook it up! Really enjoying this forum, it's been very helpful with a lot of the things I've done to my truck! Thanks again.

I just got rid of my ESC ignition on my '86.  Put a new distributor and Q-jet in.  I eliminated more unneeded wiring and possible headaches down the road.  I did a complete makeover under the hood.  Pictures coming this weekend.
