i might have to remove the fan shroud to get at the proportioning valve. i see there are two halves stapled together. would it be easier to remove the two halves separately or to remove one of the fan components?
-
Do you mean that your fan shroud is in 2 pieces and stapled together ?
-
take theo shroud out as one piece.
should be two bolts at the top, then just lift it out, it should only be clipped in at the bottom. you will have to take the fan off to get the shroud out.

Mine has 2 bolts at the top AND 2 at the bottom......

My two-piece is stapled together too. To replace my water pump, I simply removed the bolts from upper half and used pliers to remove the staples. To put back in, i simply drilled a small hole and put a screw in it where staples were to keep the halves together at the correct spot.
But, to get to proportioning valves, the bottom half must be removed....as mentioned, might as well remove the entire shebang as one piece.

any particular point where the fan should be removed?

If you take the shoud out as one piece, you have to either remove the fan or the radiator. The fan is easier.
