Title: Dash refresher questions
Post by: nlauffer on September 09, 2011, 10:29:03 am
I have an 83 GMC SWB 2wd.  I am currently trying to freshen up the interior.  It all started with the fuel pump (whole nother story).  I caused a leak in my heater core and need to replace it.  In the process of removing the heater box, I decided to remove much of the dash and contents under it.  The site has been a great resource for the heater core replacement.  I have removed the duct work and washed it.  I will be replacing old vacuum tubing, some switches, replacing speakers, painting the dash and repairing the dash cover.  So this is actually multiple projects in one.  I have removed the heater box.  I do not like the studs that hold the heater box on (two twisted off), so I think I will replace with bolts pushed in from engine compartment.  Any thoughts?  How about vacuum line replacement?  They don't seem to be standard vacuum tubing.  Any problems I might run into?  The speakers are going to be upgraded, except maybe the center.  I think I'll leave it out.  New speaker wire with this.  The dash will be painted either a flat or a semigloss black (spray can).  Now the exciting part.  I had this great idea to repair my dash pad.  I am going to use epoxy or seam sealer on the cracks and then use rubberized undercoating over the whole thing.  I am also going to cut speaker grills to fit the 3.5 speakers and dash vents out of some kind of small whole metal mesh.  Similar to speaker grill covers, except aluminum or stainless.  I thought I was the first to think of this, until I read through some posts.  So, any experiences with these mini projects would be great to here about.  I will try to post pics as I go, although I am already through the tear down phase.

kicker makes a nice 4x10 speaker for the center. Maybe you could fiberglass the dash
