In my sunpro trio cluster my volt gauge instructions told me to just hook it into a fuse on the fusebox. I just used a brass fuse tap that goes over the spade and has a male end sticking out above the fuse when installed. I believe the instructions said to put it on the top side of the fuse so it reads the voltage coming in. Mine works great

either side of the fuse will work but the power one going in wont be protected and the other one will. but it seems you might have a faulty gauge.
