Title: Fan Clutch
Post by: harkz28 on September 27, 2011, 07:25:12 pm
What is the best way to check my fan clutch. I have rocked back an forth and there is no play. When I rotate the fan it does have some resistance but not allot. It's a 1985 GMC Sub 454 with A/C auto. She runs cool until stuck in a drive through or heavy traffic?

first thing to check if your coolant level, if thats good make sure its flowing good then if thats good the only thing left is the clutch

The fan clutch can be checked by spinning by hand the fan while the engine is cold. If it spins more than 5 times without any drag, it is probably shot. At least that would eliminate the clutch as the problem.

Also check the fan shroud and make sure its not broken or way off the radiator letting air get by.

Don't know too much about them losing clutch power, all mine that failed seized and the truck sounded like an old army jeep or small airplane.
