Title: 1984 Chevy 4X4 Locking Hub Question
Post by: apchas on September 28, 2011, 06:39:47 pm
Hub Question. I got the truck (84 SB 700R4) a few months ago and I replaced the engine. Truck sat for 5 years. I was told the Transmission and engine was rebuilt but the engine had problems. I pulled the 305 and put a 350 in it. I get the engine running and drive good. I was starting to check all of the lights, 4x4 and other systems and I don't think the 4x4 is engaged. I can get the inside shifter to go go into 4Wh and 4WL. I jacked up the front of the truck and on the passenger side the hub is in the free position and when turned to locked position the axial will not rotate. Driver side opposite In free position the axial rotates and same in locked position. Am I missing something.

If I understand you right it sounds like your drivers side locking hub is not engaging .

The T-case is in 2wd. Tire off the grown in drivers side and tire spins and drive shaft rotates.

To me it sounds like its working if both hubs are locked. But if only one is unlocked then you have a locker up front or someone welded it up

Do this (with the truck in 2wd), jack up the front end and get both tires off the ground . Lock in both hubs and spin one wheel . The other wheel should spin in the opposite direction ,if this happens the hubs are engaged . Now unlock the hubs one at a time and see if the've disengaged allowing the wheels to spin independently .

If I understand you right, the drivers side will not unlock now that you lock it in. ?   If this is the case, and you can not get it to unlock, you will have to take it apart and see if a spring or c-clip gave way and is binding everything up.  Even if you buy new hubs you will have to take the old ones apart to put the new ones on, so might as well see what happened.

Found out the springs in the hub caps are shot, will not engage locks. Time for new hubs.

1/2 and 3/4 tons are the gm 10 bolt. Only 1 tons had the 60 (from the factory anyway).

Ok, so I have a GM 10 bolt. One question. When I take the cap off and look at the spline shaft it has a bronze looking busing about 1 /2 inch from the end. How do I remove it. I do not see a snap ring. Does it stay on with I put the new hub in????

I removed the old hubs (selctro) and I can not put the lock ring on. My spline shaft does not have the groove in the end of the shaft for the snap ring. My shaft has a groove cut about 1/2" to 3/4" from the end. Did I order the correct kit? Warn 20990

For future reference when checking (just the hubs) all that is needed is to jack one side at a time.put  transfercase 2wd lock hub on that side. look at axle shaft u joint verify that the axle is turning then slide a large screwdriver through the u joint to prevent axle from turning then rotate tire to insure its locked up.

i just reach behind and spin the axle shaft...no need to lift tire.
