Title: Thieves
Post by: thirsty on October 02, 2011, 06:27:29 am
Thieves in our area have found something new to steal. Firewood. My buddy works for a tree cutting company (Asplundh) that is contracted to work with the power utility in my state. A while ago he told us that his company would be working in front of my brother's house. We burn wood in the garage so that was a good deal. When the job started down the road our buddy tells us about how thieves steal the wood and if we want it we better pick it up as soon as it comes down. Then on his road all of a sudden all kinds of traffic, cops driving the road a lot, and signs going up saying don't steal my wood. His property was the last house to be done. I went out and cut up as much as I could as soon as it was down and got it up into his driveway. So yesterday it was pouring rain, he's in his house and hears wood hitting a pickup bed. Goes out side and sees two pickups and 3 guys in rain gear grabbing whatever they could lift. Holy crap...they got some balls. That wood had only been on the ground 24 hours. They took right off but he got a look at both trucks.

That does take some balls.

While they were collecting the stolen wood, I would have given them a bonus of bird shot in the air.

It's sad what the world is coming to. You feel like you have to protect every little thing you have.

How many of you have security systems in your shop?

I do! You can buy a cheap surveillance system for $300 bucks with a DVR. If you're not, you're asking for it.

Can you tell me a little more about this surveillance system(s)?

i would've called 911 and then used a zoom lens on my camera and took pics of people, plates, whatever. Chances are your property is not the only one they did.  That may have settled numerous cases as soon as the cops had them in custody then a partner got a search warrant for their residence.

He didn't get the plate #'s but he said it was one of the same trucks that the police were looking for already. In a small rural area like that the police have got to know who they are. I agree that when they catch them they will solve more than one crime. Stupid as they are they didn't realize that the wood they were stealing is going to be given away, it wasn't great firewood and if they would have knocked on his door and asked about it he would have gone out showed them what they could have. Instead they get to worry about getting arrested.

Better than nothing, but best use is as a deterrence with plenty of signage.  I had a video system and all I ended up with was pics of people I didn't know and the police just sort of shrugged their shoulders and said if they got any suspects they would let me know.

I use these for mine and I can actually view it LIVE on my smartphone via web feed  (you have to have wifi and internet for this to work)  If someone walks in front of it, I get a text or email of whatever is going on when it is triggered.

I have 2 outside Infared Cameras.

lol yeah depends on what state but someone steeling something out of your yard you cant shot even if they are braking in, you have to be in danger/ threatened. now i think its texas but i was watching tv this one guy saw some guys braking into his neighbors house he called the police and was on the phone with them and the guys where leaving but on their way out they cut across his yard just the corner so he shot one in the back and got away with it. and if you didnt kill them you know they will sue

I guess your friend was actually pretty lucky, but he should make sure he has good insurance.

When the thieves come back for another truckload one of them might get a sliver or hurt their back while on his property and sue him for everything he owns.
