Title: ouch?! my dad got me >.<
Post by: audrima on October 13, 2011, 04:03:40 pm
Well, Now that I am unemployed again. >.< my parents have been nice enough to pay my bills until I find another job. (I love my mom ^_^). But yesterday, my dad told me that I have to sell my truck! It cost to much to keep and if I don't he will not pay my bills anymore nor help with anything else. :( normally I would say fine I'll keep the truck, God will help me get a job before my bills are due again. but not this time, My medical problems are getting in the way of working (is why I lost my job). so I have the choice of my truck (and living in her) or my apartment/bills paid until I find another job. What would you do? I'm fighting it and want both but realistically I must give up my Favorite car ever. :( this makes me sad. I get to keep the money to by a new car with. but I don't want another car. I want my truck. *pouts* I don't even know what I would be able to replace her with, or how much she is worth to someone else. My grandpa had her for 33 years. why can't I keep her that long?

Sorry rant over.

That sounds like a tough spot to be in.  Unfortunately the truck probably isn't worth much to anyone in its present state but you could always "attempt" to sell it.  This would buy you some time.  Put a high enough price on it that would keep potential buyers from having any interest in it.  Look around for a suitable replacement car and weigh the differences in costs.  I don't know how far you have to travel to find work but if the truck is dependable and the insurance is reasonable it may be a good reason to keep it over trying to find something to start all over in.  Sentimental value is something you can't put a price too, kinda like my 85 C20 which is the least pretty of all my trucks but.  It sounds like Dad is trying to make sense out of your situation but gas mileage alone isn't figured into the total cost of ownership.  My $0.02

Check around your area for trucks like yours and see how much they are going for and if they are selling.  This alone might be enough for your dad to let you park it until you find a job, if it can not sell for enough to buy something else reliable, why sell it ?

i understand his logic..but, i know what your saying and feeling. id fight it . that may be terrible advice but id do everything in my power to keep the truck.  thats how i feel.

I'm with big bear...  it costs nothing for a truck to sit..  only to reg. and insure it.

Do like my buddy does.  he buys a $1000 car/truck, drives it for 3 years and sells it for $800-$1000 and buys another $1000 car.  been doing that for 12 years now.

Id say dad is right, except...  its your grandad's.  no other truck you'll ever own, EVER, will be your grandads.  EVER.  let it sit till you can mess with it again.  You probably won't get much for it anyway, not enough to justify throwing the last thing you have of your grandads away for a little money.  they print more money every day, grandads' trucks' are harder to come by.

Don't sell it to get another vehicle. That one is paid for so you will be saving money on a car payment.

I let my Suburban sit for almost 5 years before I got it back on the road last spring.  Cancel the insurance and registration, you may need to turn in your plates to not have registration fees accumulate, check with your state.  While it's not the best for a vehicle to sit unused, you can do it till funds free up.

Though out of pocket costs stop, you do have whatever value they vehicle is worth just locked up and sitting there.  So I can see your dad's point about getting your value out and rolling it into a more reliable, economical option.  But as you pointed out, that value is likely pretty low as it sits.  So play family sentimental card with whichever parent would be most sympathetic and show you are willing to take any needed steps to cut costs by parking it, taking buses, riding a bike etc.  Maybe precede that effort with a sales effort like Zeig85 recomends where you price it high enough to not sell.  Then when you move to plan B you can legitimately say we are only talking $500 (whatever the $ is) to keep this like to grandpa!

I don't wanna sound mean, but was it your Mom's dad's truck? And did yer dad and grandpa get along?

I agree with Zieg though, mark it way high. I did that with my Harley to keep it around, then someone paid the money... I still hate that guy and definetly still sore at the ex for making me sell it.

thanks everyone, Yes she sits a lot right now (been riding the rebel). dad has backed off and has not said anything about it. I am working to get a cheaper winter car. I think the main thing is that I lost my job and he now has to support me (no I do not ask for his help rather them not help) he is looking for a small tracker or the like for me too. my truck was my fathers dads truck. and the got along as well as any family did I guess. my grandpa said jump my dad said how hi lol.  I marked my truck for sale at $15,000 ^_^  I've got offers as high as $5000 for it so I thinkg 15K is a good place where it will not sell. and I can keep working on it. I'm hopeing to park it at my grandmas for the winter and work on her. but first I need to find a check ride. as for ins it's only $20/month and the reg is good for another year n half so I only have to come up with $12.66/year for inspection and reg is only $64/2 years lol. it's cheap so like $340/year for all that is not bad. it's the gas (about $500/month!) that hurts lol. anyway like I said he backed off and has not said anything about it since then. so I am hopeing he forget about it. and I am not bringing it up.

WOW!!! $500 a month in gas? How much driving do you do? I used to live 25 miles from work and only burned a 16 gallon tank in a week. Of course that was just to and from. My gas bill was 250 a month with extra cruising!

I'm about 10miles from anything I do around town. She needs a tuneup badly I think 9mpg hurts. but I do a lot of running around looking for a job, doing work, errons etc.

You got a serious $5k offer?  Where are you located, cause if I ever want to sell my junk I think I need to take it there.
