Title: Greasing front axle components...
Post by: Sodium Duck on October 14, 2011, 07:51:55 pm
So I'm almost ready to start reassembling my front axle. Once I get things back together, how much grease do I use and where? Just any old wheel bearing grease? Is there such a thing as too much in any particular place?

I think you're supposed to grease the entire stub shaft, up to the seal. The axle shaft end splines. Pack all the bearings. The whole spindle. All inside the hub. The mating surface of the locker. Am I missing anything?

That pretty much covers it, just make sure to really pack your inner and outer bearings, it is ok to have extra grease between them in the hub area.

I use brake caliper grease on all my hub parts. Seems to still move more freely at colder temps than bearing grease.

Does anyone have part numbers for seals? I tried to buy them at my local parts store and all we could find was the hub seal.

Which seals are you talking about, I have all my receipts from 1 month ago.  Unless you are talking the inner seals at the differential, that was a package deal when the shop set my gears in the pumkin for me.

I was actually able to get the right seals. I had to go home and bring them in and show them at the counter. The only thing I'm missing is that dumb little plastic spindle spacer thing that sits in the indented area on the back of the spindle. Advance doesn't stock it apparently. Now that I think about it, I also need some new slingers... dang it.

I'll have to try napa for the spacer.

Your looking for a spindle kit, it comes with the bearings, spacer, seal, and slinger.  I could not find the parts by themselves, but that does not mean they are not available.  Good luck.
The kit at oreilly is part # sbk1

Those kits don't have it... I'll post a pic tomorrow of the old one I have.

The second kit in Irish's link has the washer unless I am not understanding what you mean.  I don't know how to copy the pic and put it here, but if you go to link below there are pic's showing the spindle kit with spindle and the slinger on the axle.

Yea Tom, that's what I'm talking about! Which kit has the slinger in it as well? That's exactly what I need. I guess I may as well buy the kit and return what I go so far... Unless I can find the slinger and washer separate somewhere.

You have to be careful of the kits, I bought 2 and only 1 came with a slinger.  I took it back and they had to order 3 more of the same part # to get another slinger in a box.

This will be a fun one to explain to the guy at parts store... lol

I just about give up. I went through 5 kits. Only one had the spindle spacer. None had slingers. The spindle spacers I have are in good enough condition to reuse, and the slinger... well, they're good enough, too. I just want to drive my truck, screw this.  :)

I feel your pain.  That is why I tried at least 20 different places until I found " Dan the man " at my local Oreilly's.  I don't care if I pay a little more now for parts ( they do have a price guarantee, I don't check anymore ) When I go in to Dan with a part, he researches and finds exactly what I want, or keeps trying till he finds it.
So in my opinion his time and customer service is worth more to me than saving a few bucks.
