Title: 4speed Question
Post by: bowtieman on December 21, 2003, 11:45:00 pm
If I put a 4 speed manual trans in a 75-80 pickup could I use any shifter? Like a hurst. Or do I have to get a factory shifter?

If you use a truck tranny "no". If you put in a car tranny perhaps yes.

The reason for 77Bowtie's comment is the required shifter hole position in relation to the firewall. On the Truck transmission(4spd w/LO 1 granny gear) the hole and shifter come through the floor hump beneath the dash close to the firewall. On a Passenger car transmission like the 4sp with OD that came in many of the passenger cars and 1/2 ton trucks, the hole and shifter are located closer to your trucks bench seat. Just like 77Bowtie's reply, you have options with the Passenger car transmission. You will be wasting time looking for aftermarket shifters for the Truck transmission. I would be willing to bet money that you arn't going to find an aftermarket shifter for that Tranny. Hopefully, I cleared up any misunderstanding on this particular subject. Good Luck:)
