Well my father-in-law has worked at a Construction company-ready mix plant for over 30 years... Long story short a few years ago they obtained a mid 80's crew cab dually and has been there ever since. No title, but in Indiana there are ways to obtain one. He called yesterday and asked me to give them an offer on it. I have been wanting some parts off of it for a while but have recently thought about making it a short bed 1/2 or 3/4 ton crew cab as I have both set ups. It has a 454 4 speed in it that is supposed to run. I am going over there on Monday to get a good look at it and make an offer. I will keep the thread posted...

awesome man...

I am assuming it is 2wd ?

Yes, I am not much of a 4x4 guy.... yet....

Looked it over about an hours worth. Not bad for a northern truck but has sat for around 4 years. The good, cab seems fine but it had a visor at one time and the holes are still open. Found it interesting that it has RPO DG5 which is list as: mirror, senior west coast. The rear bed including the fiberglass fenders is in amazing shape, don't know what is under the liner though. The tilt is from an automatic but the juice clutch feels fine still. The bad the 454 is not original to the truck and all emission stuff is gone and it has headers. The TBI is also gone. Both fenders and doors have wrinkles in them and the front 70's grill has been rigged with screws. The roll bar is not bolted in and should be an easy sale. I did find the application for title paperwork and plan to track it down tomorrow, at least the phone and address line up... Some more bummers is the right rear door is a 73-76 non power door, wires were cut a the loom and the 1 ton bump stops have been removed from the frame. The basis is good for the platform if I can get it at the right price. Here is some pictures of the truck and RPO list in the glove box.

Holy mirrors Batman! lol

So Zeig, are they wanting a decent price for it ? or do you know.

Still trying to feel them out on price. Father-in-law will have the inside scoop for sure. To bad both fenders and front doors have damage... I dropped off a copy of the application for title to the truck owners address to see if they want to act on it or just surrender the title for storage fees owed. The address matches the phone #. What I don't want to happen is to go through all the work and not be able to legally get it titled now that I know it is from Illinois. Parting it out would be my only other option...
-
That makes sense, so in your state if the owner does not respond can you put a lien sale on it ?
I know out here in Ca. for any vehicle that is left on your property (like storage yards, or repair garages) , you can do a lien sale, and the registered owner has so long to respond, if they do not you can go to dmv and transfer it into your name.
-
that seems easy enough
-
Got a call from a guy at the address I dropped off my note. This guy bought the house 4/2010 from this guy, and has no idea where he went... So I am going to visit Illinois Secretary of State office and see what they say.
-
Illinois Secretary of State (BMV) was zero help, told me to go back to the place who sold it which doesn't exist any longer... Conventional means have been exhausted. I am going to make my offer tomorrow and well see if it is acceptable. I know there are means to get a title but I don't know the costs involved. I will keep you all posted on the outcome.
-
Zieg, did you check into lien sales in your county/state ?

no I have not, I will be going to the BMV soon to renew 6 registrations as they are all due 12/21 and plan on asking what the procedure is.

Zieg, Easy to get a title. Get a police check and go to your local court house and tell the clerk you want to file for a title in small claims court. It cost like 37.00 to do it. The judge will force the DMV to issue you a title.

Sounds easy, I'll give it a try if my offer flies. Thanks!!!

Well............. ;D
-
Well............. ;D
I haven't pressed the issue. My father in law feels my offer is gonna be too low but I haven't asked him if he presented the offer or not. I may contact him tomorrow...
-
Your father in law might be surprised, they might accept it cause they just want it gone.

That is what I am hoping for...
-
Well good luck!! I picked up another dually that I will be scaping the cab from and thought if you need something from it before it goes to the crusher. I'll save some parts for you if you need anything from it.
-
C'mon dude - we're all waiting!
-
update... haven't heard anything yet either way. As my father-in-law says, it isn't going anywhere... I have been concentrating on getting the garage ready to bed down my extended cab for the winter and spent the day stripping my 91 Suburban, hoping the scrap man can come tomorrow to haul it off. I have the week off for vacation so lots to do...
-
Good luck with the vacation man, I end up with a list of jobs that "have" to come before I get office time!
-
Well............... At the family Christmas gathering I got to talk to my father-in-law a bit and upped the ante. I did find out what they have in it and I am no way going to give that even with a clear title, just ain't a gonna happen... Maybe if the TBI was still in tact but it was all removed and the hack job was not good at all... all done by the previous owner.
-
That is too bad, but sounds like you would have to do a lot of work engine wise, and sounds like they want too much money for it.
-
What kind of $$$$ are they wanting for this ?? Also what year is the truck ?? Didn't the TBI come out in 1987 ???

Don't know, they think it is gold I guess... It is still sitting... It was a TBI originally I think but it is a hack job for sure. I may revisit this down the road but my parts shed is taking my time at the moment.
-
Got a call from my father in law who was approached to see if I was still interested... Should have an answer pretty soon. We are talking near to scrap price...
-
cool!
-
Patience paid off. My father in law came through. It should be here sometime next week. Now to figure out which way I want to go with it...
-
Dare I ask what ya paid?
I don't know how costs relate over there!

They could have scrapped it for more money, probably close to twice the amount... They were getting it running to drive it out to me. I am really leaning toward something really different but will have to see a buddy and talk it over with him...
-
That's an awesome result! Looking forward to updates!
-
One more dually saved !
-
Father in law called and said it is in his driveway and running strong. Can't wait for him to bring it to me. He says it sounds healthy and has a lobe to it, thinking it has an other than stock cam... We'll see...
-
Look what showed up an hour ago... Runs strong, is really loud and makes the perfect starting point for an eventual crew cab swb... Now the planning begins..
-
:o Looks good just the way it is Zieg! ;D
-
What is the plan. Short bed conversion?
-
What is the plan. Short bed conversion?
Yes, undecided whether to go 1/2T or 3/4... but it is a long term project, have to raise the money and hunt down the parts...
-
well zieg i still think that dually box would look good on my truck but oh well. any progress on this thing
