Post by: pholliday1 on November 29, 2011, 01:31:57 pm
not sure if this is the right forum for this. recently did ring and pinion swap 1 ton dana 60 35 spline installed (used) detroit locker new manual hubs etc pasenger side will not lock up acts as if locker has "weak spring" trouble shot axle isolated problem to differential. Have used detroits front and in rear on several other projects with no problems. Has any one had problems like this?

"weak spring"

This has happened to myself on one of my other trucks I used to 4 wheel with.  Come to find out that half of the locker did suffer from a weaker spring, would not overcome the rotational force to lock up completely.
     Hope this helps.

I have seen sled pull trucks strip D60 Detroit lockers, so they are not indestructible. It sounds that you may need to rebuild your Detroit. If it does have a weak spring it could have worn the edges of the gear cogs to the point that it will not lockup any longer.

The Detroit Locker is the best locker out there, and is atleast 2X better than the lunchbox lockers, but I am going to try a Dana/Spicer PowerLok in my sled puller's D60 front. We'll see how it turns out. The only other option is to go to a full spool, but on a 4x4 sled puller that means locking, and unlocking the front hubs until time to pull. This gets to be a pita if you don't have someone along to lock and unlock your hubs before, and after each run.
