Title: th 400 "No Park"
Post by: 81GMCBILL on November 30, 2011, 07:03:15 pm
81 GMC K3500    383/th400/np205
Ive been working on this truck since I bought it a month ago and was ready to get it inspected, but.....backed it out and put it in Park and it just coasts still like neutral, all the other gears work, reverse,drive,2nd,1st. but there is no like locking in park.

does anyone have any ideas on what I need done here ? Does the transfer case have anything to do with it? like not in the right gear.

maybe it needs new filter ? or ?
thanks

The parking pawl is not engaging.  If your linkage is adjusted correctly and there is no play then it is internal

Drop the pan and make sure the park lock mechanism didn't fall out. The bolts loosen up and the parking pawl will not engage.

You can also try manually shifting it into park, on the drivers side of the tranny is a lever that the shifter(in the truck) connects to to sort through gears SET YOUR PARKING BARKE AND HAVE SOMEONE HOLD THE BRAKE!!!!  push it all the way forward (towards the engine) that will be park, its possible that the linkage is out of adjustment.  If it still rolls after that then its definitely a problem with the parking prawl

I dropped the pan, found out the previous owner tried to weld the hold down bracket that connects to the pawl. the bracket was broken and would not keep the actuator to engage.
So i went to the junkyard , figured out that they will not sell parts from the cores they had, so i had
to buy the core for $65, Anyways it was the best thing to do... i tore into it and learned how it all worked before i put in my own truck.
Anyways i am now an expert in "Parking Pawl" technology.

the end.
