Title: My truck was ceased
Post by: BANDOLERO Z-28 on December 02, 2011, 04:54:37 pm
My awesome days with my 78 step side have been brought to a halt, about a month ago I went to the NM MVD to try and register it under my name, and everything was well until the lady went to check the VIN. All the numbers are matching but, there is 1 number that was bent so they told me I had to get a VIN check from the state police. Today I went, and as the office came walking towards me he said those words that we know it means bad news “step into my office” ahhh man!!! Sure enough there is a discrepancy with the VIN and they ceased my truck, the VIN on the cab doesn’t match the VIN on the chassis, now they have to run an investigation to see if the truck was ever stolen. I hope it doesn’t get any worse than this and I get my truck back sometime next week, have any of you ever dealt with a situation like this?

Wow. Never had anything like that happen in Alaska in my 33+ years up here. I did buy a surplus truck from a company that had a fleet of vehicles. I was given the wrong title, and registration and our DMV never caught it. About a year later I noticed the title and VIN didn't match. The company did find the correct title and a trip to the DMV and all was well. Of course, that was 25 years ago and things were simpler then. Hope it's something simple and you get your truck back soon.

It is common for cabs, or frames to get switched because of rust. A lot of people go buy a parts truck to swap something out and never take care of switching vin #s with their local DMV. Hopefully nothing comes back stolen and you just have to fill out paper work to get the different vin #s on you title.

WOOHOO got my truck back, the officer said the VIN in question was from a 1975 GMC and their database only goes back to 1976 so there was no information on the VIN and case was closed. Driving my baby in the snow with bad wipers, no heater and frozen toes never felt so good!!!!!!

That's why I switch the VIN from the old cab to the new one, Never have to worry about that!

Or some shady car dealer (or salvage yard guy) put it back together one day, and wanted to get by with selling a salvage title vehicle...
Oh and uh... what did your truck cease to do? You said it ceased...
;D Just kidding, couldn't resist.

Did the same on my truck like blazin said. I had a 80 cab that was worth more to scrap then to fix. I bought a 85 cab and the guy i got it from lost the title but had the registration n the vin tag in his hand. I made him sign a document stating it wasnt stolen and his phone number. I took my vin from the 80 cab n swapped it on the metal dash i also replaced. All is good and legit.
thanks pat
p.s. glad to hear your truck is ok. Time to put a heater core in it huh???

i know years ago we talked about switching vins, and while cops usually look for the dishonest ones who do this it is still illegal and you can get in trouble truck can get impounded you can get fines and jail time. not saying that i havnt or have done it but i wouldnt go telling the world wide web that i have done it.

Yeah no heat sucks, the water lines that go to the core are there but disconnected I’m going to see if the core is functional if not I’ll replace it. But I have a question, my cab is a no ac cab, what would be better replacing the cab again to an ac cab or buying all the parts from a junkyard?

or you can get vintage air. but its a little pricy but if you go buy all new parts for yours than its not much more

I picked up a cab off craigslist and it came with the title. So I figure, since I have both titles in my name, my trucks and the cabs, that I could do a cab swap and not have to worry about a VIN swap sonce I have titles with both VINs on it. I believe that if you wanted to switch the VIN numbers from your old cab to the new on you have to take it to the MVD and have it inspected.

I would think if California is letting you swap vin numbers, it should not be that hard in other states. As long as you got paperwork on both trucks and nothing comes up stolen, here you just need to take it all to the DMV and they will give you a new vin.

there are proper steps to be taken before you attempt this first both vehicles have to be inspected to make sure the vins belong to said trucks this is to be done by state police i dont know for sure havnt done this but this step for some reason i remember reading about. but contact your dmv then they will tell you how to get a hold of the state police. and go from there but i know they have to inspect it before you attempt to do anything. same is said if you just want to remove the vin because the dash is to rusted out or even dodges where putting the vin right in the dash pad. but this was for vehicle restoration purposes
