Title: Carb/TBI Tank Difference
Post by: redneckabbott on December 09, 2011, 06:31:37 pm
What's the difference in the carb gas tank and the TBI tank? My 87 needs tanks and my cousin is trying to give me one from his carb truck.

I believe the tanks should be the same, the sending units will be different.  Your 87 will need a fuel return line, while most carb trucks sending units do not have them.
If you are changing tanks I would suggest new sending units also, cheap insurance unless you recently put in sending units.

The 87 tank has baffles to keep fuel at the fuel pump.  It's up to you whether you think it makes a difference.  I swapped a 5.3 (fuel injected) into my 81 with an 87 sending unit (for the pump) and I've been using the stock 81 tank.  As long as you don't run your tank too low you should be fine.

As stated, the difference is the baffles in the tank on the EFI versions.
