Title: GM 6.2 L Diesel
Post by: junkman. on December 24, 2011, 11:07:58 pm
What year did GM go to a one piece rear main seal on the 6.2 L and do they have small per-chamber heads (none turbo engines)

thanks JM

The precombustion chambers increased in size each year and horsepower increased.  The 1982 6.2's started off with 135 hp and they had the smallest precombustion chambers and by 1992, power was up in the 175 hp range.  Or course fuel economy took a big hit as the precombustion chambers got larger.

junkman, I was always under the impression that the 6.2 was last used in 1992. you should have a 6.5L in your 94

For the most part, they were cheapened.  The forged rockers were replaced with flimsy stamped rocker.  The earlier blocks had more chromium which slowed down cylinder wear and lessened the chance of the bottom end letting go.

it's hard to answer your questions because of all of the variables. if the truck is in good shape then the price sounds good. mpg could be anywhere from 14 to 20+ depending on tires, gearing, condition of the fuel system, driving style etc. (we ave 18 to 22 with our 85k10 turbo with 411 gears on 33" 1250r15 goodyear mtr's) the good news is that parts are relatively cheep and available to rebuild any problems with the truck.
good luck

on the pass side of the block normally 6.2 or 6.5 is cast on mine is blank i think its a new GM crate engine it came out of a small buss and had a cracked piston this engine was being rebuilt while the truck was still being driven with the stock 82 engine in it

i found the invoice from the machine shop 4/4/2000 and i bought the truck in 10/2001 there is only 20,000 miles on it from the rebuild and i have not put over 150 miles on it in the last ten years its been parked

here's some part#'s
pistons SAF594--.050MM   rings E468K   gasket set 260 1315 O H    hope someone know what they are

thanks JM
