Welcome to the site from California. I do not know of a 5 speed with PTO hook ups like the SM465. I have included a web site for identifying manual transmissions, hope this helps.

The tranny doesnt need PTO, its on the transfer case.

here's the thing do you want to upgrade to a 5 speed because your sm465 is in need of repair or do you want to upgrade because you want the overdrive and your sm465 needs repair. The most obvious choice for you would be an nv4500 from a 90's 3/4 or 1 ton truck but they are VERY expensive and you would need to do a lot of messing around to make it work. Your trans should have a 10 spline output shaft mating to a 205 transfer case. NV4500's iirc all have 32 spline outputshafts so you would need to get a 32 spline 205 transfercase. I would look at why you really want a 5 speed if it's just to replace a worn out sm465 then I would suggest finding a different sm465 or rebuilding yours. They are dirt cheap compared to nv4500's and they don't need any modifications. Plus the nv4500 is a lot longer and not quite as strong as a sm465, close but the 5th gear has some issues.

1979, his winches he uses for towing(wrecking) are controlled off the PTO ports(most likely for a hydraulic pump to run the winch) on the SM465.
snibook7537, the NV4500 tranny does not have PTO ports, ( unless you found one that does and I am unaware of ), ralphhemi stated it is on his wrecker which makes me believe he uses it to move vehicles and needs the winches.
ralphhemi, I would suggest you have the tranny rebuilt, it is easy and should not be too expensive. If you are looking to change to a 5 speed for mileage purposes, you will need to change to electric winches for you wrecker ( like I said, I can not find a 5 speed tranny with PTO ports). In the long run, it would be cheaper to have the SM465 rebuilt in my opinion.

I would fix the sm465. it will be cheaper and it is a great tranny.

My $0.02, fix the SM465 (4 Speed). If your tranny drops out of 3rd (i.e., under light load), new synchronizers should help.
About 1998, Peterson's 4 Wheel & Off Road did a write up on the SM465 and mentioned an aftermarket retainer that would remedy the transmission from dropping out of 3rd gear. A rebuild with new synchronizers would help for a while.
You could also just do what the farmers do; hold the tranny in 3rd until your ready for 4th...

Hi I have 78 K 30 4x4 4spd. and it walks, or kicks of 3rd. if you lay your hand on the lever on acceleration & if you don't hold it in on deceleration it jumps out

What trans do you have? You said 4 speed but which 4 speed? How are your trans mounts? Does it have shift linkage or is it a top loader?

I understand the sm465 has 2 PTO ports, but the NP205 has 1 PTO port, if you re-read his post, it says the winches are PTO driven off the transfer case. Therefore, the NV4500 doesnt need PTO ports.

@bake74
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/nv4500.htm this site says it has dual PTO ports. I'm not sure if they actually do because everytime I have seen one in the junkyard they have already been sold. I am really looking for one to swap into a military k30. I figured with those 4.56 gears an OD would be nice plus I would be plowing with it and the older ones had a synchronized reverse. I know they changed the trans a bit along the way so perhaps they got rid or added them at some point. I'd be curious to see when they did add them if they did.

Vile, this is the 3rd post that he has asked the same question, he has a wrecker with a sm465, the pto is running his winches I believe. I do not know why he is skipping around.

That is good to know, I have to keep that in mind.
