1985 C20, 350. I need a new exhaust system. I'm game for headers, x-pipe, h-pipe, single, dual, whatever but (here's the catch) I don't want it to be loud. I'm into audio and keeping a low profile with law enforcement. I don't want the attention and I don't want to drown out my tunes. So, is there a fairly quiet free flowing exhaust? Is it counterproductive to get headers only to have a (I assume) more restrictive muffler? I'm looking for only street performance. 350 is stock for now, mild upgrades later, gotta have exhaust right now though. Help me keep it down!

I would recommend the flowmaster delta flow 50 series. I just had them put on and they sound amazing. They are, I believe, the most quiet from flowmaster. Here's a link to a youtube video that I had favorited. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyNh0u6HtZU
In this video, it sounds loud, but on the inside of my cab, it's actually really quiet. Almost stock-like sounding.

Any header you get will increase the sound some, can not avoid that. As far as mufflers go, I am planning on using these, http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-17157/ . Suppose to be quiet while cruising, and throaty when you open them up.

Flowmaster Hushpower ll will definately help keep the noise down. Keep this in mind..The longer the muffeler the quieter the notes. This is part of the reason OE's weigh 30+lbs and are 3ft long.

i just got a full dual exhaust put on my V30 454 for $650. I put new manifolds on then brought it to a shop. They told me there was a relationship between how much you spent and how much you heard.
Meaning to get a quiet exhaust without sacrificing performance your gonna have to pay for it.
He offered a flowmaster (ithink 70 series) for a little less cash but i opted for 2 of these http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=9310
with tail pipes coming out just in front of the rear tires. They did a great job and the sound is perfect. They are a high flow muffler but I'm not getting rattled around the cab even when I get on it.

They were trying to prepare you for "their pricing", I have found out over the years that everyone, including shops have their own pricing and what markup they want to operate their business.
In my industry for example their is a tier system on buying stuff from the manufacture. There is 30%, 40%, 50%, depending on quantity that is bought over the space of a year. My shop is at 50% which means that I do not have to mark up as much as those buying at 30 and 40%. So I can pass savings onto the customer by running more sales on the list prices set by the manufacture and still make a profit.
Now the part to me that is the most important part is service and knowledge. I am willing to pay more for something if the knowledge is there and the service is outstanding.
I guess I just don't like it when they say "it is gonna cost you for better" unless they can back it up with excellent service. I know nothing about the shop you took it too, but I have met too many people in my life that treat others like they are just a paycheck instead of a customer that keeps their business running. Sorry had to vent for a min.

This would make me wanna get a friend to go up there with thte same style Burb and ask for loud and see if you get the same reply.
Bake,...So what your saying is that this shop possibly doesn't do as much vendor type services with Magnaflo to warrent cheaper prices or that not as many people come in asking for a quiet performance exhaust. Either way you taught me something..If i can buy the major parts cheaply my self up-front it may save me a lot in the long run. I just can't see paying that much foe exhaust unless if was on a show truck with full stainless.

Was that just cat-back? I could see that for a full system including headers and new highflow cats but cat-back...WOW!

The aftermarket manifolds had a different output angle than the original. I had the shop bend custom pipes to avoid the oil cooler on the driver side. So the 650 included front pipes gaskets flanges and stud, the mufflers and the tail pipes all fully attached welded and hung. Regarding the original question i think dual exhaust is quieter than having a single muffler.

The magnaflows were around $125 each. I think series 50 flowmasters would have been around $90 ea. This is shop price. I may have found better prices online but these guys did a nice.job and im happy with the sound. Ill take a few pics tonight and try to post them.

I was just trying to point out to people mainly not to go with the first thing they hear. It does not hurt one bit to shop around and especially if you are looking for a shop you are going to be doing business with to ask around and find out what kind of service they have and customer feed back.
You know the old saying goes, " if you treat 1 person right, that 1 person will tell 10 friends, out of those 10 friends 2 or so will come in and try your business. If you treat those 2 right they will go tell 10 friends apiece, so you can see where this goes.
Excellent service is getting harder to find these days, and when I do find it I reward the individual/company for that Excellent service.

Shady service is especially easy to come by...I hear ya man give 'em props on making theri customers happy by giving them what they want the way they want it... like Burger King..

Found the old manifolds. The top one is what i put on instead. Maybe its a tbi vs 4bbl manifold??

well it looks like it's in there good. With those 24" long magnaflo's can you even hear it? j/k I like the way you had it dump on either side. I read that you did that but seeing it brings it into a better prespective.

for a 454 its actually really pretty quiet. The suburban, on the other hand, has a y pipe from the manifolds to a 40 series flowmaster (single in dual out). Its definitely got that tell tale flowmaster rumble at idle and it really growls when you get on it.
