Title: help need stub axles/outer axel shaft ~spacer washer??
Post by: frotosride on January 07, 2012, 12:26:00 am
:-[   READ LAST POST FIRST I NEED HELP AGAIN>>>So i bent the stub axle lobes on both left and right side. I don't need chromoly axles, yet. All i'm looking for as some stock replacements used or new for a fair price. I have found a few used ones but they do not have the the 3 lock ring grooves on the splines that i need. If anyone can help its for a corprate 10 bolt 8.5 or D44 more specific 1987 silverado v10. Thanks in advance.

I put 40% stronger axles in my 86 3/4 ton with a 10 bolt last winter from Randy's Ring and Pinion. I did inners, outers, and 50% stronger axle joints. They were almost $100 cheaper than stock strength replacements. Thorugh Randy's.
When I called GM they said they are discontinued.

Inners are different. Outer stubs will interchange though

Yes they do fiffer for the tonage mostely because the diffrent axles in the larger tons. D44 and corporate 10's are the only ones that have th interchangable outers but they are not all the same design so you still have to be careful when swapping them but most of the hub, knuckle and spindle part are the same like bearings, seals and ball joints.

There are two different legnth spindles. Not sure what year they changed but years ago I tried putting a spindle off an older 44 like early to mid 70s onto an 84 10 bolt. It was so long ago I don't even remember if it was to long or to short, but I do remember having to go back to my pile of axles in waste deep snow, and remove a second spindle!

The Spindle Length Changed in 1977.  In 77-87 all the spindles are built the same 73-76 are all different..
learned that the hard way... you can use a pre 76 spindle just be sure to use the wheel bearings, hub, and rotors for it also .
Code: [Select]
They are different because GM used the dana 44 73-76 but that doesnt mean that theres not a later model with a dana 44 just be sure you get a 10 bolt spindle use your old one for measuring.
i put a dana 44 spindle with a 10 bolt hub and rotor and pulled them apart to change an axle shaft and realiazed when my bearings fell out on the floor somthing was wrong.
a junk yard will be your best bet or try a classic truck site that specializes in the older chevrolets
Goodluck,
John

i believe the outers are different too because when i ran the 44 spindle my 10 bolt shaft had alot of play in it now that i put a 10 bolt spindle it doesnt anymore

I have used 44 outers in 10 bolts with no problems. No difference in clearances that I could see.

Tahnks for all the info. I luckely found a guy up here who has 3 football fields full of old chevy truck potential and he had the stub shafts that I needed. I just hung the front springs and axle housing an hour ago.

I do have another question. What should I set my pinion angle @ for stock ride height? Maybe an easier question. Should the knuckels be completley verticle or when the correct pinion angle make them offset.
Oh and for future refference do not lay directly beneth the u-bolts when you are trying to put them back in....it will chip your tooth if it hits you in the mouth..living proof!

Disreguard that last question. After looking at for a while I have it figured out. Now that i got a new coat of paint on everything and new bearings and races in plus new ball joints hopefully if will last another 20+ years.

New Subject..
I edited the subject line because I now have a new problem. I apparently lost or the last person to take this hub apart lost the axle spacer washer. WHAT IS THAT? I am almost positive that is what they are called. (placement/location) Once the hub us assembled on the spindle there is a third snap ring grove on the stub axle closest to the spondle. Inbetween the spindle and snap ring is the thrust washer. I NEED HELP finding a new one.  :o Anyone out there with any leads would be doing me a huge favor....Thanks in advance
